33. Synchronicity

“We’re finally here!” Krystal exclaimed as she landed her feet on the terrace of a tall building.

It had taken them a while, but Faith had finally brought Krystal and Prince to India. The trio were in the center of the state of Yamuna. They were supposed to be heading to Kunjukumari, but Krystal wanted to stop in first in the Pushpamangalam district.

It didn’t take long for Krystal to seemingly get distracted. Prince had to follow her around to every stall and shop in the shopping district. He could tell Faith was confused as to what they were doing, but this obviously didn’t surprise him. This was to be expected. With all the time and money spent, she had so many shopping bags that she couldn’t even carry them all, leaving Prince and Faith to hold some for her as they went to a small restaurant by the name of Pooja Eats.

“There’s so many good options!” Krystal exclaimed as she looked over the menu. “I think I’m leaning towards the rasam and rice combo. What about you guys?”

“Krystal, what are we doing exactly?” Faith asked.

“What do you mean?” Krystal asked. “We gotta eat after all.”

“She means to ask why you’re not focusing on the task at hand as usual,” Prince said.

“Why must you always put things so harshly?!” Krystal exclaimed. “Are we not allowed to have a nice lunch?”

“We are,” Faith said. “You just shouldn’t lose sight of why we came here. More specifically, why you wanted to come here. It’s certainly not proper to lose sight of a goal once it’s been set.”

“I won’t hold it against you for shopping since that’s just who you are, but even I think we need to get our priorities in order,” Prince said.

Krystal shrugged. She understood what Prince and Faith were saying. She couldn’t help herself getting immersed in India. It was one of the few countries that she had never gotten a chance to see.

Prince sighed. He said, “Look, if you want to keep sightseeing, it’s fine.”

Krystal was surprised to hear Prince be understanding. He didn’t even sound annoyed.

“You’re okay with this?” Krystal asked.

“Yeah. You’re the ringmaster after all. I gotta trust that you know what you’re doing.”

As Krystal pondered, the server arrived to take their orders. She ordered food for everyone and after the server left, she said, “Okay. After lunch, we will head straight to Kunjukumari.”

“Good,” Prince said. “Carrying these shopping bags for any longer is gonna break my arms.”

Krystal and Prince chuckled. Faith found herself intrigued with the duo. Getting to know them and their world was proving to be an interesting challenge for her.

***

After lunch, Krystal and Prince flew on Faith to Kunjukumari. The journey to get there wasn’t too long, but it certainly felt like it for Faith.

“Next time we go traveling, maybe drop the bags somewhere else,” Faith said, feeling the weight of Krystal’s shopping bags on her fareon body.

“Hey! How could we come to India and not shop?!” Krystal exclaimed.

“It could’ve waited until after we reached Kunjukumari,” Prince said.

“The shopping district has amazing deals!” Krystal said. “I couldn’t pass on that opportunity.”

“Okay, okay! Let me just bear with this till we reach the village,” Faith said as she kept flying.

***

After some time passed, Krystal, Prince, and Faith landed in Kunjukumari. They landed directly into the village, and Faith transformed into her chibi form once they reached the ground. Krystal took a moment to note her surroundings. The sweet aroma of jasmine flowers was everywhere along with the tall coconut trees. The houses and shops varied in color but the colors that stood out were cloudy blue and pastel yellow. She noticed lotus motifs on some of the buildings and pathways.

“This village is quite beautiful,” Faith said.

“Yeah, I didn’t expect to see so many flowers,” Prince said.

“I’m so excited,” Krystal said. “All right. We need to go to Mithra Pillai’s house.”

“Well, we have the address that Imani gave us, right?” Prince asked.

“Yeah. Based off the numbers I’m seeing on these houses, it looks like her place must be further down this road,” Krystal said.

“All right then, we should start walking,” Faith said.

“Walking?!” Krystal exclaimed. “Can’t you fly us there?”

“No way. I used so much energy to fly you guys here,” Faith said. “You also can’t rely on me all the time. Proper students must be able to handle certain challenges on their own.”

“It wouldn’t have been as much if you resisted your shopping urges,” Prince said to Krystal as he started walking, carrying half of her shopping bags.

“But…how can I walk in these shoes?!” Krystal exclaimed, referring to her new pink pumps. “They’re gonna get dirty!”

“Not our problem,” Prince and Faith said in unison as they walked further ahead.

Krystal whimpered as she started carrying the rest of her shopping bags. She forgot how light her backpack was as soon as she started walking.

***

After walking for a little over a mile along the pathway, Krystal, Prince, and Faith reached Mithra Pillai’s house. Krystal’s feet had gotten so sore from all the walking that she had to take off her shoes midway and finish the route barefoot. Once they reached the house, Krystal dropped to the ground, exhausted. She looked at the soles of her feet and noticed how red they had gotten.

“So, this is why people keep telling me to wear sneakers,” Krystal said as she remained on the ground, panting.

“Yeah, but you’ll never listen,” Prince said. “This is a nice place.”

   “I agree,” Faith said.

Krystal slowly got up and looked at the house. Just like all the other homes in the village, this home didn’t look like the others. The outside exterior was pale yellow with a cream-colored roof.

As Krystal walked up to the front of the house along with Prince and Faith, she took note of the beautiful greenery surrounding the home and the many palm trees surrounding the place. Before they could reach the door, a tall, lean man opened it. He had short dark hair that was slightly curly and wavy at the same time. He wore a forest green short-sleeved shirt with a brown plaid lungi. The man looked at the group and said, “Can I help you?”

“Yeah. Sorry to bother you, but we’re looking for Mithra Pillai,” Krystal said. “This is her house, right?”

“It is,” the man said. “But is she expecting you three?”

   “Well, not exactly,” Prince said.

“Then I can’t let you see her,” the man said.

“Oh, come on. We have a note from someone she knows,” Krystal said.

“What is going on here?” a voice asked.

The man stepped aside as a woman came towards the door. Krystal couldn’t help but notice how beautiful she was. Her hair was long with dark, loose curls. She had a teal bindi on her forehead that drew attention to her chocolate eyes. Her ears were adorned by small, silver jhumka earrings, and she wore a dark blue kurta with matching churidar.

“Hi,” Krystal said. “Are you Mithra Pillai?”

“Yes, I am,” the woman said. “Who are you?”

“My name is Krystal. Krystal D’Cruz,” Krystal said. “This is my partner, Prince, and our guardian, Faith. We’ve come a long way to see you.”

“Listen, child, I’m not interested in seeing strangers right now. I already have a lot going on as it is.”

“We’re not strangers though. We were sent here by someone you know very well.”

“And who would that be?” Mithra asked.

Krystal took out the note that Imani wrote for her. She handed it to Mithra, who unfolded the note, reading it silently. As Krystal watched her read it, she could see Mithra’s expression change from confused to annoyed.

“Damn it, Imani. Let them in, Pradeep,” Mithra said to the man.

Pradeep welcomed Krystal, Prince, and Faith inside the house.

***

Krystal, Prince, and Faith were led to the living room. The floor was made of a shiny granite that sparkled like it was just made yesterday. There were at least four plum-colored velvet-cushioned chairs and a forest green-colored velvet couch. They seated themselves on the couch while Mithra sat in one of the chairs across from them. Pradeep served them all lime juice and sat down in the chair next to Mithra.

“Thanks for the juice, sir…Pradeep, right?” Krystal asked.

“Sorry, I didn’t introduce him properly,” Mithra said. “This is my husband, Pradeep.”

   “Hello,” Pradeep said.

“Nice to meet you,” Faith said.

Mithra let out a deep sigh. She couldn’t tell if she was tired or annoyed.

“Imani really sent a bunch of kids to me knowing my current situation,” Mithra said.

   “Uh, current situation?” Faith asked.

“Let me spell it out for you all since it’s not noticeable yet,” Mithra said. “It’s only been the two of us this whole time, but now a third addition to the family is coming.”

“Aww, you’re having a baby!” Krystal exclaimed. “That’s amazing! Congrats! If I had known, I would’ve brought a gift!”

“Hold on, you said she knows about your situation,” Prince said. “What exactly does the note say? We didn’t read it since it was addressed to you.”

“The general gist of it is that this will be great training for motherhood. And I owe her one,” Mithra said. “Don’t even ask about it.”

Krystal could see the irritation in Mithra’s face increase. She wasn’t sure what she could say to make her less annoyed, but she figured she’d have to start explaining herself.

“Well, anyway, we want someone to train us. Me especially. You see, I have this new weapon, and I need to learn how to use it with my usual weapon,” Krystal said as she drew out her zodiac wand.

“Hold on. Is that what I think it is?” Pradeep asked.

“It is,” Mithra said. “How did you get your hands on one of the zodiac wands?”

“Wow, everyone acts like it’s so hard to get one of these,” Krystal said. “I just read about it in a book, solved the riddle, went to the place to get it, battled my friend for it, and now it’s mine. No biggie.”

Mithra was surprised with how nonchalant Krystal was. She didn’t expect a mere student to get their hands on such a powerful artifact.

“So, your reaction tells me you’ve heard of the zodiac wands,” Prince said.

“Yes, but this is my first time seeing one in person,” Mithra said. “So, you want my help with learning how to use the wand?”

   “Yeah,” Krystal said.

“And what about your partner here? Is he supposed to be some cheerleader for you?” Mithra asked.

“Hey! What’s that supposed to mean?!” Krystal exclaimed.

“Mithu, spare her,” Pradeep said to Mithra.

“You heard me,” Mithra said to Krystal. “Your partner is here for you, but are you here for him as well? You want to learn how to use this weapon, but you can’t just let your partner take a backseat.”

Before Krystal could say something, Prince said, “Look, Ms. Mithra, I’m not taking a backseat here. I’m here to support Krystal as her partner. I’m just as invested in this as she is.”

Krystal was surprised to see Prince speak up for her, but she was touched by the gesture. Mithra was also taken aback by Prince’s outspokenness.

“Very well,” Mithra said. “Pradeep, can you arrange some new sheets for them in the guest room?”

“I’ll do that right now,” Pradeep said as he got up.

“So, we’re gonna start training today?” Krystal asked.

“Not today. I need time to understand your skillset and the zodiac weapon you have to figure out the best training methods,” Mithra said. “For now, you can rest as I’m sure you’ve traveled for quite a while. Now I don’t go easy on anyone. Make sure you take that into consideration.”

Pradeep helped Mithra get up, and the two headed out of the living room. Prince looked at Krystal and could tell she was looking a bit nervous.

“You’re intimidated by her, aren’t you?” Prince said to Krystal.

“Me? Intimidated? Ha!” Krystal exclaimed. “It’s gonna take more than that to scare me away.”

   “Really?” Faith said.

“This is the same girl who gets scared of spiders. She’s bluffing,” Prince said to Faith.

“Oh, shut up, Prince,” Krystal said as she got up and exited the living room with Prince and Faith following her.

***

Early in the morning, Pradeep came to the guest room that Krystal, Prince, and Faith were sleeping in and rang a large bell. The sound was so loud that it rattled Krystal’s eardrums, making her jump out of her bed and shriek. Faith slowly woke up while Prince remained sound asleep in his bed.

“What the hell is the bell for?!” Krystal exclaimed. “It’s only four in the morning.”

“Yes, but Mithu needs you to eat breakfast as soon as possible. She believes in making the most of the day,” Pradeep said.

“Well, maybe she doesn’t understand the concept of beauty sleep,” Krystal said. “Can’t we get at least another hour?”

“Oh, come on, Krystal. We’re in their home. And since Mithra is your teacher, you have to do as she says,” Faith said.

“What is with your partner?” Pradeep asked Krystal, looking at Prince, who was still sleeping. “This bell can wake up just about anyone.”

“Not Prince. He tunes out pretty much everything from class lectures to bells,” Krystal said.

“I’m surprised he doesn’t tune you out when you talk,” Faith said.

“Okay, now that’s just rude, Faith!” Krystal exclaimed. “We’ll be ready in a bit.”

Pradeep nodded and left the room. Faith turned to Krystal, wondering how they could possibly get ready soon with Prince asleep.

***

After thirty minutes, Krystal, Prince, and Faith had breakfast with Mithra and Pradeep. Pradeep had prepared idli and sambar. After eating, Mithra and Pradeep led the others outside to the garden. As tired as Krystal was, she enjoyed the presence of the jasmine flowers. She had never seen so many before. There were several bushes of them, and their sweet, light aroma was enough to make her stay awake.

“Wow, this garden is gorgeous!” Krystal exclaimed.

“Please tell me we didn’t get up super early to do gardening,” Prince said, letting out a yawn.

“Of course not. We’re going to do our training here today,” Mithra said.

“Um, is this really an ideal place to train?” Faith asked. “I mean, would you really want to ruin this beautiful garden.”

“Actually, the garden is perfect for today’s training,” Mithra said. “We’re keeping things light and simple for now.”

Pradeep helped Mithra get to the small bench for her to sit down. Mithra signaled Krystal and Prince to sit down before her. Pradeep stood by her side while Faith moved over to the trees to watch.

“Okay. We’re going to start our training from a mental standpoint today,” Mithra said.

“Okay, how exactly does that help me with learning to use my new weapon?” Krystal asked.

“Remember, your weapon isn’t an ordinary one. The spirit of Leo rests within the chain. Normal ringmaster weapons are connected to their users through the techniques they utilize for them,” Mithra explained. “In the case of a weapon linked to a spirit, the user has to properly bond with the spirit for the connection to work.”

“Okay, how does that apply to Prince?” Krystal asked.

“Prince, as her human-beast partner, you too will have to connect with the spirit. You have to treat this new weapon as a member of your team,” Mithra said. “In this way, fighting with it and developing the right combinations and attacks will work out.”

   “Got it,” Prince said.

“Good. I’m going to demonstrate something for you both,” Mithra said.

Mithra drew out her wand. Krystal was intrigued, hopeful that she’d get to see her powers on display. After all, she was Yashi’s cousin. And from the way Imani spoke about her, she had to be a very capable ringmaster.

Mithra tapped her wand to transform it into her weapon. The wand was in the form of a machete. The blade had a sharp curve at the end and was in an oxidized gold color with a golden handle to match. Krystal was intrigued by its appearance as she had never seen anything like it.

“Wow, your weapon is stunning,” Krystal said. “Does it have a formal name?”

“It’s called an aruval. It was passed down to me by my mother,” Mithra said. “My father passed his weapon to my brother, Dhanush.”

“Oh, that’s the guy that Neil chased after for training,” Prince said.

“I’m going to use my weapon before you, and it’s crucial you pay attention,” Mithra said.

Krystal and Prince stood by, ready to watch. Mithra turned to Pradeep and nodded to him. Pradeep’s body gave off a bright white glow as the entire form of his body changed. He transformed into an elephant. Krystal was amazed at just how big Pradeep was in this form.

“Whoah!” Krystal exclaimed. “I’ve never seen an elephant human-beast before!”

“That doesn’t surprise me. Pradeep was the only one at our school back in the day,” Mithra said.

“What academy did you guys go to?” Prince asked.

“We went to Lotos Caeli. It was a while after graduating from there that we got married and settled down here,” Mithra said.

“I don’t think I’ve met anyone from that school,” Krystal said.

“We can tell you about that later. Right now, you need to focus,” Mithra said.

Mithra nodded to Pradeep. Pradeep closed his eyes while Mithra looked down and concentrated as she drew out her wand, tapping it to transform. Krystal was carefully observing them both, especially Mithra. She looked incredibly focused and in tune with herself. More importantly, her breathing and concentration was synchronized with Pradeep.

“Okay, Krystal, I want both you and Prince to focus your energy and concentrate it just like we’re doing,” Mithra said. “And Krystal, put your zodiac wand down to the side.”

   “Well, okay then,” Krystal said.

Prince transformed into his beast form. Krystal transformed her wand into her sonic bell. She kept the zodiac wand on the ground. She closed her eyes and held onto her sonic bell while Prince closed his eyes and concentrated as well. Krystal could feel their sound energies building up internally and synchronizing. It was a lot like the equilibrium technique.

“You’re doing good,” Mithra said as she paid attention to Krystal and Prince. “Now, pay attention and follow what we do next.”

Krystal and Prince opened their eyes. Even though Krystal was still synchronizing with Prince, she watched Mithra and Pradeep closely. Her aruval glowed blue and so did Pradeep’s body. A twisting array of water droplets emerged from Mithra’s aruval. Pradeep raised his trunk, allowing a similar array of water droplets to flow from it. They floated in the air, almost dancing around each other, merging into a single entity. Krystal was in awe of the sight. It felt like something that she would’ve seen at one of the circus shows at RTA.

   “Wow,” Krystal said. “That’s beautiful.”

“I want you both to do what we just did.”

   “Hold on. How can we?”

“The goal of this exercise is for you both to synchronize properly.”

“But we’ve already done that. Prince and I learned how to use the equilibrium technique.”

“This isn’t an ordinary equilibrium technique. What I’m showing you is the Shakti equilibrium. This technique is a more advanced version of the usual equilibrium technique you learn in the academy.”

   “What makes it different?”

“The standard technique is about synchronizing your energy levels to combine them into a singular unified attack. The Shakti equilibrium allows you to synchronize your energies and release just pure energy. The point of this is to allow the spirit of Leo to recognize your energies and be familiar with them. In this way, you’ll be able to synchronize and use the weapon.”

“So, this technique is just for releasing energy? Not for battling?”

“Of course not. I’m sure you’ve seen energy attacks. While this one takes a bit of time to get used to, it’ll certainly be useful in future battles. You may even be able to use it in your upcoming final exams.”

Krystal understood what Mithra was getting at. She knew she and Prince had to do this right to prove they were worthy students to Mithra. She turned to Prince and remembered the time they fought Cyrus for the chain of Leo. His eyes were giving the same look from back then. She knew he was willing to work by her side.

Mithra watched Krystal and Prince close their eyes. She could see the silver-colored energy flowing from their bodies as they synchronized perfectly. The sight of pure sound energy wasn’t new to her, but the way it twisted into a vibrating entity was different. It was somewhat erratic but controlled. She could see their contrasting beings were colliding through their energies.

Mithra was impressed with the way Krystal and Prince were handling the exercise. The two had potential. Probably more than she thought they had.

“Good work,” Mithra said. “You can stop now.”

Krystal opened her eyes and Prince transformed back into his human form. She looked at Mihra and said, “So, how exactly did this exercise help?”

   “Look down,” Mithra said.

Krystal looked down and was stunned to see her zodiac wand had a flickering yellow glow. She hadn’t seen it shine like that since she first got it.

“Leo has now sensed your energies. The shakti that you unleashed is now familiar to him.”

“I’m kinda confused. I spoke to his spirit when he appeared before me after receiving the chain. So, why do we need to do all of this?”

“You were trusted with keeping the chain. Have you even heard or seen the spirit since you last spoke to it?”

   “Uh, no.”

“Well, there’s the issue. The spirit needs to get to be able to trust you to actually work with you.”

Pradeep transformed back into his human form and helped Mithra stand up. Seeing her up, Krystal got up along with Prince, holding both her sonic bell and her zodiac wand. Mithra said, “All right. Let’s take a short break and we’ll go at it again.”

“Hold on,” Krystal said. “We have to do the same exercise again?”

“Of course. This is going to be our focus for today,” Mithra said. “You performed it well, but you’re still a bit rusty.

“Rusty?! You’re calling me rusty?!” Krystal exclaimed.

“Well, you’re not exactly the greatest at energy control just yet,” Prince said.

“It’s not a bad thing,” Pradeep said. “You’re both young and inexperienced. It’ll take multiple attempts to perfect this technique. I’ll get water for everyone.”

Pradeep headed inside with Mithra while Krystal and Prince remained where they were. Krystal sighed, feeling a long day of training was ahead of them. Faith couldn’t help but marvel at what was unfolding. She found Mithra to be quite the teacher and that Krystal and Prince were in for quite a lot.

***

Krystal fell flat at the dining table. She felt relaxed and exhausted at the same time as she sat slumped in her chair. It was evening time, and she and Prince had completed a long day of training. They practiced the Shakti equilibrium technique so many times that she had lost count. Faith looked at Krystal and said, “Now, Krystal, it’s not good manners to sulk at the dining table.”

“Do I look like I care?” Krystal asked.

“Wow. I think I’m rubbing off on you,” Prince said, chuckling.

“I don’t understand why you’re like this. Prince seems to be handling today quite fine compared to you,” Faith said.

“You know, I’m starting to think you’re picking favorites in this whole guardianship thing, Faith,” Krystal said.

Mithra sat down at the dining table while Pradeep started bringing in the dishes he made for dinner. As she sat down, she took note of how tired Krystal looked and said, “Are you okay?”

“Do I look okay to you?!”

“Now, is that really a way to talk to your teacher?”

Krystal didn’t say anything. She looked at Faith, who was giving her the side-eye. Even Prince shook his head. Krystal sighed and said, “I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay. I did say training would be intense,” Mithra said. “Hopefully, dinner will lift up your spirits.”

Krystal looked at the table, intrigued by all the dishes on the table. She inquired about the names of the curries with Pradeep who told her the various names.  The vegetable curry consisting of carrots, potatoes, and other vegetables was called avial. There was okra curry as well as fish, rice, and pappadums. She began taking a portion of each dish for her plate while everyone else did the same. “Wow, this looks so good!” Krystal exclaimed.

“Indeed. I must say, Pradeep, you’re quite the chef,” Faith said.

“Well, thank you. Mithra’s cooking leaves a lot to be desired, so I handle that around here,” Pradeep said.

“Oh please, I’m not that bad,” Mithra said as she started filling up her plate.

“It’d be funny if you were as bad as our friend, Sana,” Prince said. “She tried making soup for our friend, Rey, and he literally spit the whole thing out.”

“So, all your good friends are back at RTA?” Mithra asked.

“Yeah, pretty much,” Krystal said. “Though I made a new friend at Pytho Sigma.”

“Well, it must be a lot for you kids to come here on your break away from them,” Mithra said.

“Yeah, but honestly, after everything my friends have been through, I think we all thought training was the right way to go for spring break,” Krystal said.

“Speak for yourself, you wanted to go to the beach,” Prince said.

“Oh, shut up, Prince!” Krystal exclaimed.

While Krystal and Prince were bickering, Mithra couldn’t help but think about the old times when she and Pradeep were at the academy. She couldn’t help but smile.

***

After dinner, Krystal, Prince, and Faith were getting ready for bed. Krystal came out of the bathroom after brushing her teeth and putting on her orange silk pajama set. She looked at Faith, who was reading a rather huge book. What surprised her even more was seeing Prince read as well. He was reading an Indian film magazine that he picked up from the coffee table in the living room.

Krystal looked at her phone, checking her messages. She sighed and said, “Unbelievable.”

“What’s the matter, Krystal?” Faith asked, looking away from her book.

“It’s Zayn. He hasn’t replied to my GleeChat messages,” Krystal said.

“Since when do you use GleeChat?” Prince asked.

“How else am I supposed to message people from another country?!” Krystal exclaimed. “You really think my dad would want to pay those ridiculous rates for overseas data plans?! Please!”

“Okay. Why do you care?” Prince asked.

“What do you mean why do I care?”

“You seem to be making quite the fuss over a text. It’s not like it’s a matter of life and death. Maybe he’s just busy.”

“Can’t I just be frustrated that he won’t respond?”

   “You can. It’s just silly.”

   “Ugh! I need water.”

Krystal put her phone down on the nightstand and headed out of the room. Faith turned to Prince and said, “Why do I get the feeling you were messing with her?”

“It’s our group’s thing. You’ll get used to it,” Prince said.

***

Krystal headed over to the kitchen and got the water pitcher from the fridge, filling up a glass. She paced around, slowly sipping the glass a few times as she pondered over Prince’s teasing. Was Zayn really just busy or was he ignoring her? She didn’t think he was that kind of person, but she also didn’t know him for long. A more pressing matter came about as she felt an aching pain in her arms. All the energy control exercises she and Prince did today made the slightest movement of her arms painful. She was so sore. Mithra said it wouldn’t be easy, but if this was how training was on the first day, Krystal couldn’t imagine what the next two weeks would look like.

Krystal stopped pondering as soon as she heard voices outside. She walked out of the kitchen, went past the living room, and slightly opened the door that led to the garden. Mithra and Pradeep were sitting with each other on the bench, seemingly admiring the stars.

“You’ve been very quiet,” Pradeep said.

“Sorry, I have a lot on my mind.”

   “What’s troubling you?”

Mithra sighed. She looked down at her belly, feeling her anxiousness eat at her.

“You seem more overwhelmed than before.”

“Motherhood certainly makes me nervous. It’s even more nerve-wracking with those kids present.”

“They’re nice kids…Krystal and Prince. Faith seems to keep them both in check.”

“I hope they don’t think I’m too hard on them. It’s been so long since I mentored students.”

   “You’re doing just fine, Mithu.”

“Hopefully they agree. Imani was certainly right about this.”

   “Right about what?”

Mithra sighed and said, “Teaching these kids is a test for how good a mother I’ll be. I don’t want to let Krystal and Prince down just as much as I don’t want to let our child down.”

Krystal was surprised to hear what she was hearing. The whole time she kept thinking that Mithra was strict and hard-headed. However, she also seemed to have a delicate heart as well. She saw Pradeep hold her close and say, “I know it’s not easy to believe, but I know in my heart that you will be an amazing mother.”

Mithra could feel her eyes water. She rested her head on Pradeep’s shoulder. Krystal was in awe of how sweet they were with each other. She wished she could have someone love her in such a way. As she tried to head back inside quietly, she slipped on the floor and landed outside with a loud thud.

Damn these socks, Krystal thought as she slowly sat up. It quickly hit her that she had something else to be concerned about. Mithra and Pradeep saw her. Mithra got up and shouted, “You were spying on us?!”

“Oh, God, no!” Krystal exclaimed as she stood up.

“Then what were you doing? Late night snacking?”

“I just got some water and overheard a little bit.”

   “That’s spying.”

“No, it isn’t! I just happened to hear you guys, and I was curious about who was talking. Come on, Pradeep sir, you get what I mean?”

Pradeep slowly got up and shook his head. The disapproval made Krystal say, “Come on! I didn’t intend to intrude on your moment!”

“Too late for that,” Mithra said as she got up. “Pradeep, let’s go to bed.”

***

In the morning, Pradeep had prepared a steamed fish stew called fish molee for breakfast. While eating, Krystal could tell Mithra was still annoyed about what happened the previous night. She said, “I already said I was sorry about yesterday.”

“What did you do?” Prince asked Krystal.

“She listened in on our conversation last night,” Pradeep said as he sat down to eat.

“Krystal, that is not proper etiquette,” Faith said. “Eavesdropping is quite rude.”

“You should listen to your guardian more,” Mithra said.

“I’m never going to live this down,” Krystal said, rolling her eyes.

“Anyway, forget about that,” Mithra said. “You guys need to eat well. Training is going to be intense today, so you need all the energy you can get.”

Great, Krystal thought as she kept eating. Just what I needed.

***

After breakfast, Krystal and Prince had to get ready for the grueling training that Mithra spoke of earlier. The two were asked to come to the chamber room. It was just as big as the garden, but Mithra considered it to be more appropriate for today’s training session. Once they headed out of their room, they went downstairs, meeting with Faith outside the steel door that led to the room. Krystal opened the door, surprised to see how vacant the chamber was. It wasn’t what she expected. It reminded her of the plain white room that Aiden had made them go to for detention.

Mithra and Pradeep were waiting for them. Krystal said, “So, what is this place?”

“This is where we do our special training,” Mithra said. “I haven’t used this space in so long.”

   “It’s so empty,” Prince said.

“Yeah, is it not possible to train at the garden?” Krystal asked. “This room feels like an interrogation cell.”

“Today’s training HAS to be here,” Mithra said. “You’ll see why soon enough. Pradeep, are we all set?”

“Teleportation controls are ready to go,” Pradeep said, holding onto a remote.

“Teleportation? Fascinating,” Faith said. “This certainly is a new means of training.”

“Hold on,” Krystal said. “How is this going to work?”

“Just trust me,” Mithra said. She turned to Pradeep and said, “Proceed.”

Pradeep nodded and pressed one of the top buttons on the remote. Krystal looked at the floor and could see that she and everyone else had been transported out of the room. She shrieked seeing where they ended up. It wasn’t even really a room. It was almost like a dark void of some kind. Krystal felt like she had entered another dimension. She and everyone else were floating in a sea of darkness. She felt so uneasy as she couldn’t feel a ground of any kind at her feet. The voidness slowly faded. Suddenly, Krystal could see again as what appeared to be a blue sky formed before her eyes. As she looked down, she saw herself land with Prince on the petal of what looked like a giant lotus flower. She looked around and saw several lotuses surrounding her. Mithra landed on an opposing lotus while Pradeep and Faith were sitting in the distance on a small cloud-like surface.

“Whoah, what is this?” Krystal asked.

“This is the Lotus Dimension,” Mithra said.

“Dimension?” Prince said. “You mean we’re not on Earth anymore?”

“You’re in a realm of my creation. It’s a highly advanced magical technology that transforms the space to my liking,” Mithra explained. “Everything you see here seems real, but it isn’t. It’s a simulation.”

“Simulation magic. It’s just like that detention we had with Aiden,” Krystal said.

“Even though this environment isn’t real, you will utilize it for today’s exercise,” Mithra said.

Mithra turned to Pradeep, nodding to him. He moved to the side with Faith. They were further away from Mithra, Krystal, and Prince. Faith turned to Pradeep and said, “You’re not going to be participating?”

“Today it’s up to Mithu alone to work with them. With how serious things are going to be today, it’s best not to have too many people on the field.”

“Well then. This should be interesting.”

Mithra drew out her wand, transforming it into her aruval. Krystal was puzzled but intrigued. She wondered what Mithra’s plan was.

“All right. Today’s training will be a battle between me and you two,” Mithra said.

“What?!” Krystal exclaimed. “Why would we battle you?!”

“Yesterday’s training made you focus on the Shakti equilibrium. That technique was able to trigger something from your zodiac wand,” Mithra said. “Now the test is to see how it reacts to you both in combat.”

   “Reacts to us?” Prince asked.

“The spirit within the weapon will only truly fight by your side if you can prove your power,” Mithra said.

“Is this really necessary?” Krystal asked.

“The answer is in battle,” Mithra said as she held up her aruval. Her aruval glowed a beautiful bright blue color.

Great. I was really hoping to avoid fighting her, Krystal thought. After all, she’s Ringmasters Society level good. I don’t see how I stand any chance in winning. Guess I have no choice.

“All right, Prince, transform!” Krystal exclaimed.

“Ugh, fine,” Prince said as he transformed into his lion form.

Krystal took her stance, holding her sonic bell. She had an idea of what she was up against, but she had only gotten a glimpse of Mithra’s power the other day. Keeping this in mind, she knew she had to keep her guard up.

Mithra swiftly launched her aruval, emitting a strong water current towards Krystal and Prince. Krystal and Prince dodged the attack quickly, but Krystal was quick to notice the water current flow its way towards her, striking her into Prince.

“What the hell?!” Krystal exclaimed as she and Prince got up. “Okay, Prince, use your Sonic Roar!”

Prince nodded and launched his Sonic Roar attack while Krystal assisted him with a sound beam from her sonic bell. As the forces collided into a sonic wave to hit Mithra, she countered with her aruval. She carefully pushed it into the sonic wave, distributing some slight heat that hit the wave back at Krystal and Prince.

As the two fell back, Krystal felt rattled by the attack’s force. She could tell Prince was feeling the same way as well. The rattling effect had even transmitted to the petal of the lotus they landed on. What exactly does she do? She’s throwing water and heat at us, Krystal thought as she could feel the excruciating pain of the vibrations. I’ve never seen a combination of powers like this before.

Before Krystal could direct Prince to attack again, Mithra shot a heavy stream of water from her aruval in her direction. She tried to power her sonic bell through it, but the water was too strong for her to do anything as she got washed up by it along with Prince. Krystal coughed a bit, already feeling out of breath.

Prince transformed back into his human form and said to Krystal, “I think I have an idea of what her power set is.”

   “You do?”

“Neil told me a little bit about Shuto and Haruka’s powers. Their powers come from seasons with Shuto’s being winter and Haruka’s being spring. I know they’re not blood families, but something tells me her powers are related to summer.”

“You might be right. That would explain how she can use manipulate water and heat.”

“You’re quite perceptive, Prince,” Mithra said.

“So, is this the part where you tell us about your powers?” Krystal asked.

“Now, now, don’t think that I’m here to explain things to you. And you have more pressing things to worry about,” Mithra said as her aruval began to glow again.

This is tough, Prince thought. This is different from when we faced Cyrus. She’s on a whole other level since she can manipulate our own sound against us.

Prince looked at Krystal. She seemed calm but also bewildered. He said, “Are you okay?”

“I don’t know. I knew she’d be hard to battle, but this is beyond challenging. I can’t even land a hit on her.”

“We don’t have to concern ourselves with landing a hit.”

   “We don’t?”

“No. This isn’t about winning a battle. This is about getting the chain of Leo in action. Do you sense anything from it?”

“I felt a single vibration while we were attacked. That’s hardly anything. I don’t even know what to do at this point.”

“It’s all right. Just take a moment to figure out what you need to do.”

She’s not very predictable. That doesn’t mean I can’t play around for a bit to figure out her battle style, Krystal thought. She paused for a moment, looking around at all the lotuses that surrounded them.

“All right. We’re gonna keep going,” Krystal said. “Prince, I think it’s time. This environment is perfect for Plan: Zigzag.”

“Say no more. I got this,” Prince said as he transformed back into his lion form.

Prince leaped off the petal toward Mithra, launching a Sonic Roar attack. Mithra countered with a water current from her aruval. As Prince dodged the attack, Krystal came in and launched a sound energy beam from her sonic bell while Prince landed on a different lotus. Mithra pierced through the beam with her aruval’s sharp edge like it was nothing. Krystal and Prince continued the back-and-forth pattern of attacking, going from one lotus to the other. As Faith watched them, she was confused as to why they were attacking in such a way when they weren’t landing a single hit on Mithra. They didn’t seem fazed by it. She wondered what they were up to.

Krystal signaled Prince to pause. She was starting to get a sense of Mithra’s battle style. More importantly, she was getting a sense of how she countered her opponents. As she continued to think, she could sense her zodiac wand’s vibrations. She could feel the spirit of Leo was beginning to connect with her. She knew that if she wanted him to join her in combat, she had to think of something creative to get to Mithra in battle.

Krystal could feel an idea come her way. As she continued to think, she heard a voice say, I see. You’re more strategic than I thought.

So, you do talk, don’t you, Leo? Krystal thought. You’re about to see how good of a team we make.

“Prince, stay where you are!” Krystal exclaimed.

Prince was not too far from Mithra. In fact, he was perfectly aligned on an opposing lotus with Krystal and Mithra was right in the middle of them. Seeing the look of determination on Krystal’s face, he knew what they would do next and nodded back to her.

Krystal focused all her energy into her sonic bell. While she did that, Prince focused his energy as well. As they were doing this, Mithra was curious, wondering what they had planned as she prepared her aruval to attack back. Mithra got a sense that they were going to attack her from both ends. She spun her aruval around rapidly, unleashing another water current.

I knew she was going to do that, Krystal thought. Krystal plunged her sonic bell to the ground and shouted, “Savage Sound Roar!”

Prince unleashed a mighty roar, and its sound waves headed straight into the water current while Krystal’s sound waves did the same. Krystal sensed a vibration tingling her skin that felt exactly like a heartbeat. She drew out the zodiac wand, and it was emitting a radiant golden glow. The wand transformed into the chain of Leo, attaching itself to her sonic bell. She immediately whipped the chain forward. The chain transformed into a golden current of sound waves that pierced through the water current. The sight stunned Mithra as the water current neutralized. Mithra quickly used her aruval to block the colliding forces from hitting her directly. She looked at Krystal, who winded the chain back in, holding onto its end tightly. She smirked and said, “Well, well. Looks like you both did it.”

Faith was surprised at what had transpired. She looked at Pradeep and could tell he was taken aback, but he seemed to be pleased. She didn’t expect such ingenuity from Krystal in using Mithra’s own attack against her.

Prince transformed back into his human form and said, “Well done, Krystal.”

“Actually, we both deserve the credit. I understand now what we needed,” Krystal said. “I was focusing so much on the perfect attack that I forgot to take a step back and evaluate my opponent. Prince helped me do that. It’s because of us working together that we were able to accomplish this.”

“That’s how a ringmaster should be,” Mithra said. “I will say that your creativity as a team has impressed me. Now that you have officially activated the chain of Leo, the rest of your training is going to be about cultivating a battle style that suits both of you and allows for the chain of Leo to work with you.”

“Well then. We’re going to have some long days ahead,” Pradeep said.

“We did it!” Krystal exclaimed as she walked over to Prince.

“High-five?” Prince asked as he raised his hand.

Krystal smiled as she high-fived Prince. She looked at both her sonic bell and the chain of Leo. They both reverted to their wand forms. Thank you for trusting us, Krystal thought as she looked at the zodiac wand.

These kids might be fun to work with after all, Mithra thought. She cleared her throat and said, “All right. Let’s get a few more rounds in before lunch time.”

   “All right,” Prince said.

“Oh, come on!” Krystal exclaimed. “Can’t we take a break after such victorious moment?!”

“That sounds like quitter talk,” Mithra said.

   “Ugh, fine,” Krystal sighed.

Krystal and Prince continued their training session with Mithra. As Faith watched them with Pradeep, she couldn’t help but think what was to come. Krystal and Prince were proving to be a surprise she didn’t expect.

Mind Catcher

“Damn it! I’m gonna be late!” Neil exclaimed as he dashed towards the front doors of Ringmasters Training Academy. It was a Tuesday morning, and the school day was just about to start. Neil only managed to wake up after getting ten phone calls from Heer, who told him that he had missed breakfast. Neil rushed through the hallway, knowing full well that Professor Luna would be displeased at his tardiness once again.

Neil looked at his phone as he kept running. He only had a minute left, and the door to the classroom was just at the end of the hall. Determined to make it at the bell, Neil lunged forward, quickly managing to slide through the door as soon as the bell rang.

“YES! I made it!” Neil exclaimed.

Neil looked around, seeing everyone was staring at him, including Sana, Rey, Krystal, Prince, Heer, Zayn, and Akira. Before he could get more attention to himself, Neil quickly made his way to his seat next to Heer.

“Smooth, Neil. Very smooth,” Prince said.

“Hey, I made it on time!” Neil exclaimed. “Besides, Professor Luna isn’t even here yet.”

“Apparently she’s not even coming today,” Rey said.

“Wait, what?” Neil asked.

“I heard one of the teachers say she had to fill in for one of the other instructors at the academy conference,” Sana said.

“Which means she won’t be here for at least two weeks,” Heer said.

“Thank God for that,” Krystal said as she finished painting her nails a baby pink color.

Sweet. A break from Luna is just what I needed, Neil thought.

Suddenly, Neil saw a man enter the classroom. One look at his outfit was enough for him to know Krystal would have an opinion on it. He wore a gray sweater, gray pants, and gray dress shoes. He had his brown hair smoothed back. Neil could hear Krystal whispering to Prince, “Wow, zero creativity in the fashion department.”

Fashion aside, Neil was getting an intense vibe from the guy. The man put down his briefcase on the desk. He looked up at everyone, cleared his throat, and said, “Hello, all. I’m Professor Lyle O. Justice. You can all call me Lyle though.”

Then why even introduce yourself as a professor? Neil questioned.

“Professor Luna has assigned me as your substitute. Just because I’m a sub, don’t think I’ll go easy on you kids,” Lyle said.

“Seriously?” Krystal said quietly. “Get over yourself, Lyle.”

“Young lady,” Lyle said. Krystal was startled, seeing Lyle was looking directly at her. “Why don’t you stand for us?”

Krystal begrudgingly stood from her desk. Lyle said, “What’s your name?”

“Krystal.”

“So, Krystal, would you like to share your riveting and engaging thoughts with the class?”

“Not really.”

“Did I give you a choice?”

“Technically you did by framing your sentence as a question.”

This will not end well, Prince thought.

“Well, you’ll have plenty of time to think about technicalities in detention,” Lyle said.

“What?!” Krystal exclaimed. “How is that fair?!”

Lyle turned back to the board to open his briefcase while Krystal sat down, puzzled. Even Professor Luna wasn’t this bad to her.

“All right. You will all read chapters ten through twelve in your textbook today and answer the following reflection questions,” Kyle said as he passed out papers to every student. “Whatever you don’t finish is homework, and you must bring it tomorrow. You have to engage all the content sufficiently to earn full credit.”

“Excuse me, sir, what does engage mean?” Heer asked.

Lyle turned to Heer and looked at her as if she had asked him for both his kidneys.

“I would expect students to know what basic directions mean,” Lyle said.

Sheesh. What an ass, Neil thought. Everyone began working quietly, opening their books and reading along. Neil opened the book and took a look at the reflection questions. There were five of them, and they seemed to be pretty basic questions. Neil figured the assignment wouldn’t be too bad.

***

Later that day, the gang met up at the cafeteria for lunch. As they got seated, Krystal came up to the table, annoyed as she put her lunch down and said, “That Lyle is such an ass. How dare he give me detention?!”

“I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I didn’t even think you deserved it,” Prince said.

“Wow. That’s a first from you, Prince,” Krystal said.

“He seems to have a pretty big ego,” Zayn said.

“He never even answered Heer’s question,” Sana said. “What kind of educator is he?!”

“Maybe it was a silly question for me to ask,” Heer said as she reached for her fruit cup.

“Heer! Don’t you make any excuses for him talking to you like that!” Neil exclaimed.

“Yeah, he’s an ass,” Rey said as he munched on his grilled cheese sandwich. “I swear he’s making me wish Luna was back, and I never thought I’d say that.”

“At least it’s only for a short time,” Akira said. “When’s your detention, Krystal?”

“Friday. I’m going to miss the sale at Reshawna this weekend,” Krystal said. “I was gonna get the new Dreamy Lilac baguette!”

“You’re rich. Why would you care for a sale?” Prince asked.

“Money is something you have to use wisely, Prince!” Krystal exclaimed. “Sheesh. I just want this god-awful man gone already.”

“Come on, guys. It’s just two weeks,” Sana said. “Maybe he was just being tough for the first day. He could end up being a lot nicer tomorrow.”

Neil sighed. As much as he wanted to believe Sana on what she was saying, something in his gut was telling him otherwise.

***

Two days later, Neil dashed to Energy Enhancement class with two minutes to spare. Everyone seemed just as frazzled as he was. Two days with Lyle had turned into a level of monotony that wasn’t ideal. Neil was even surprised with himself that he showed up to class. It was probably because he was too afraid to skip in fear that Lyle would make him regret it by hurting his grade. After all, he was barely passing the quarter so far.

“Okay, I have your reflection papers graded,” Lyle said. “Some of you did what I wanted. Some of you didn’t.”

“Oh, God,” Neil said quietly.

Lyle began handing everyone their papers. Neil could see everyone was looking anxious to some degree. All but Sana and maybe even Akira.

As soon as Sana got her paper, she was immediately appalled. The score on her paper was seventy percent. She couldn’t believe the number of red marks, X-marks, and comments were blatantly ripping her work to pieces.

“He gave me a seventy,” Sana said, still in disbelief.

“Damn. We got the same score,” Rey said. “Something must be wrong with the universe.”

“Sheesh. Who gives a fifty on a reflection paper?!” Krystal said.

“I’m asking the same thing,” Neil said, bewildered by the fifty on his paper.

“Is there a reason you kids won’t stop chatting?” Lyle questioned Sana, Neil, and Krystal.

“Oh, we’re fine, sir,” Sana said.

“Actually, we’re not,” Neil said.

“Here we go,” Prince said quietly.

Neil stood up from his desk even though he could tell from the looks on Heer and his other friends’ faces that they wished he would just keep quiet. He said, “Aren’t these grades a little harsh?”

Neil could tell this question didn’t land well on Lyle. His sternness turned into a frightening vibe.

“Are you questioning my methods?”

“No, I’m just asking a question.”

“Neil, you got a fifty percent because your work was worth a fifty percent.”

What the hell?! Who does he think he is announcing my grade in front of everyone?! Neil thought.

“You know, I don’t think announcing my grade to everyone answers my question or gets your point across very well,” Neil said.

Neil could tell from the mixture of deafening silence and shocked faces from his classmates that he said something that wouldn’t land well. It didn’t take too long to guess from Lyle’s face that he wasn’t too happy either.

“Since you’re so bold today, Neil, why don’t you reflect on what you did wrong in detention on Friday,” Lyle said.

“What?! But I-”

“You can sit down now.”

Neil sat down and pouted. He said, “Great. I really blew it.”

“Well, at least you have company in detention,” Akira whispered.

“Hey, I equally don’t want to be there,” Krystal said.

“Okay, silence everyone. Open your books to chapter thirteen. Read till fifteen and do the reflection paper for the three chapters,” Lyle said as he passed out papers to the class.

Sheesh. He has the nerve to act like such a bastard when he doesn’t even bother to teach, Neil thought.

And so, another boring class went by. As everyone was getting to leave the classroom, Neil looked at Sana, who was staring at her reflection paper grade again.

“Still bummed about your grade?” Neil asked.

“I’m beyond bummed. This isn’t just the lowest grade I’ve ever received,” Sana said. “Some of these comments are just mean.”

“No kidding,” Krystal said.

“You could just ask him about it,” Rey said to Sana.

“And end up like Neil?” Zayn said.

“I’ll give it a shot,” Heer said.

“Uh, are you sure about that, Heer?” Prince asked.

“I got the same grade as Sana, so I had some questions about how to improve. I’m sure if I ask him now since class is over, he’ll be nicer,” Heer said.

Heer made her way to the front desk where Lyle was at. Neil watched her along with the others, scared at what could happen.

“Excuse me, Mr. Lyle,” Heer said. Lyle immediately turned from the chalkboard, looking at Heer. Heer could feel his intimidating presence, but she decided to remain calm and composed.

“I just wanted to ask some questions about the feedback on the reflection paper. I understand where your comments are coming from, but could you possibly explain this in a clearer way?” Heer asked.

Neil and the others watched with anticipation to see how Lyle would respond. Neil couldn’t tell from Lyle’s face if he was angry, annoyed, or both. Heer waited for an answer as Lyle cleared his throat.

“Ms. St. Hale, since you don’t seem to know what fluff is, it’s basically space-filler, superfluous verbiage, or the kind of writing that talentless high schoolers do to meet a word count,” Lyle said. “There was so much fluff in your paper that it was hardly even a paper anymore.”

“I’m sorry about that,” Heer said. “Is there a different way I should be answering the questions?”

Lyle sighed. He cleared his throat again and said, “Heer, when you reflect on something, you should be saying something.”

“But I did say something.”

“You gave me meta-commentary. If you want to improve, you should start by not writing fluff. Fluff writing may work for students like you now, but in the future, it will not be rewarded.”

“I’m sorry, I still don’t know what you mean by fluff.”

“Since you want to be difficult, you’ll learn a thing or two in detention this Friday.”

“Detention? But why?”

“That’ll be all. You can see yourself out now.”

Heer was so confused, but more importantly, she could feel her self-esteem shatter in seconds. She quickly turned to the door to leave as tears began to burst from her eyes. Neil was appalled, and he could tell the others were equally upset. They quickly left the classroom to catch up with Heer before she went too far.

***

Lunchtime felt like a therapy session. Heer couldn’t stop crying, and the rest of the gang was trying everything to cheer her up. Sana, Krystal, and Akira stayed with her at the table while the boys went to get food.

“No teacher has ever told me my writing is fluff,” Heer said as she wiped the tears from her eyes.

“An educator should never speak to anyone the way he spoke to you,” Sana said. “Or write such nasty comments.”

“I swear, what’s he got against fluff?!” Krystal exclaimed. “He must hate fluffy marshmallows! Or fluffed pillows!”

“Or stuffed animals while we’re at it,” Akira said.

Soon, Rey, Prince, Neil, and Zayn came back to the table with plenty of food on hand. The food included a nice tray of cookies and strawberry cupcakes.

“Okay, we got as much comfort food as possible,” Zayn said.

“My wallet hurts, but anything to make you feel better, Heer,” Prince said.

“Oh, please, Prince. Your wallet always gets burned at the candy store,” Krystal said as she grabbed one of the cupcakes.

“I don’t know about you guys, but this Lyle guy has gone too far,” Neil said.

“I can’t believe I haven’t gotten detention yet,” Rey said. “How does Heer get detention before I do?!”

“Well, you normally get detention without trying,” Sana said.

“You’re just mad that you got a seventy on the assignment like mwah!” Rey exclaimed.

Rey realized that he shouldn’t have said anything as soon as Sana started glaring at him. He turned away, hoping she’d cool off.

“I don’t even feel like going to that class anymore,” Heer said.

“You know, me too,” Neil said. “I say we don’t go until Luna comes back.”

“And risk more failures?” Sana said. “Yeah, not happening.”

“Of course, you’d say that,” Neil said as he rolled his eyes. “Well, I’m just not gonna bother till Friday. This man can fail me all he wants.”

“In other words, nothing else is new with you,” Prince said.

“Oh, shut up,” Neil said as he took a bite out of his salami sandwich.

***

Neil stood by his word. He refused to go to class up until Friday. It’s not like he was going for perfect attendance anyway. He met up with the gang in the hallway to catch up on what he missed.

“Wait, you got detention, Akira?!” Neil asked.

“Yup,” Akira said.

“You should’ve seen how badass she was,” Rey said.

“What’d you do?” Neil asked.

“Lyle went off about how half the class doesn’t know the meaning of reflection and was just doing meta-commentary on the assignments,” Zayn said. “So, Akira gets up and tells him that the grading system is a broken social hierarchy that enforces elitism amongst children.”

“The little man couldn’t take the heat,” Akira said.

“Why didn’t you guys tell me this earlier?” Neil asked.

“We didn’t think you’d want to hear about Lyle on your little vacation,” Krystal said. “I can’t believe half of us are going to be in detention today.”

“And I’m not part of that half,” Rey said. “I’m almost sad.”

“Well, it’s not too late to get detention today,” Sana said.

“Oh, not happening. Prince and I are going bowling after school,” Rey said.

“What?!” Neil exclaimed. “You made plans without me?! That too with Prince?!”

“I only agreed to go if he’d shut up,” Prince said.

Before Neil could say anything, the bell rang. As the others made their way to class, Neil wondered if he should even bother going. Of course, he did have to show up for detention, but he figured he didn’t have to subject himself to another day in Lyle’s den.

“Are you coming, Neil?” Heer asked.

“You guys go ahead. I think I’m gonna sneak into the library this time around,” Neil said as he dashed off.

“Why does he bother skipping again?” Sana asked. “You guys have to face Lyle at detention anyway.”

“In Neil’s world, there’s no harm in delaying the confrontation of your problems,” Prince said.

***

Later, at the end of the school day, Krystal, Heer, and Akira waited by the doors to the lower floor for Neil. Heer texted him to meet them there since they had to meet with Lyle for detention inside one of the classrooms there. Krystal was getting impatient, tapping her new purple strappy heels furiously on the ground.

“Krystal, you’re gonna scruff those heels if you keep doing that,” Akira said.

“Well, I can’t help it,” Krystal said. “At this rate, we might get detention for missing detention.”

“We could just go without Neil,” Akira said.

“No, we can’t just leave him,” Heer said. “I’m sure he’s on his way.”

Thankfully, Neil arrived seconds later. He was sweating and panting before he finally said, “Sorry, I’m late, guys.”

“Why are you late?” Akira asked.

“I went to the wrong floor,” Neil said. “About three different times.”

“Oh, Neil,” Heer said.

“Whatever. Let’s just go in and get this over with,” Krystal said as she opened the doors.

The four headed inside, walking down the hall till they got to the very last classroom at the dead end and headed inside. Once inside, Neil was surprised that Lyle hadn’t shown up. The classroom had an eerie presence. Neil felt like some haunting presence was creeping over his shoulder.

“I can’t believe that jackass is late,” Krystal said.

“I sure can,” Akira said.

“Neil, are you okay?” Heer asked, seeing Neil looked slightly off.

“Do you guys feel like something is off?” Neil asked.

“Like what?” Krystal asked. “The only thing off is the AC circulation. How is it colder here than upstairs?”

Suddenly, Neil could hear the sound of the door locking. He turned around, seeing the door was indeed closed.

“Guys, who closed the door?” Neil asked.

Before the others could turn around, Lyle appeared just like that. The sudden sight of him frightened Neil. He had a feeling something bad was going to happen.

“Since when could you do that?!” Neil exclaimed.

Lyle wouldn’t say anything. Neil could tell that the girls were getting just as intimidated as he was. Suddenly, the room began to change. Neil could feel a sense of dizziness smack him upside. It was like a whiplash effect. In a matter of seconds, Neil felt his body was trapped. He was strapped to a chair at one of the desks. As he tried to budge, he could see Krystal, Heer, and Akira were stuck in the same way. He looked up to see Lyle standing before them. He was taken back to the time Aiden had the gang in detention. Except this time felt different. It felt far more sinister.

“Okay, what the hell is going on?!” Neil questioned Lyle. “Let us out!”

“I can’t let you out of detention,” Lyle said.

“I thought I wouldn’t have to relive the war flashbacks from when we had detention with Aiden,” Krystal said.

“What the hell do you have planned exactly?” Akira questioned.

“Why tell you when I can show you?” Lyle said.

Neil was suddenly more confused than scared. He turned to see Heer’s head hanging down, looking at the ground. She was eerily silent. He saw the same thing happen to Krystal and Akira as well. Before he knew it, he could feel an overwhelming sense of fatigue strike his head like a gust of wind. He could feel he was losing consciousness. Suddenly, everything went black.

Neil slowly woke up. When he did, everything around him was different. He wasn’t in the same classroom anymore. Lyle nor the girls were with him. He was alone in a completely white void. He could feel that his legs were going numb from the fear that was overtaking him.

Suddenly, Neil could feel his legs being pulled down. He could see demon-like arms grabbing hold of him. He tried to break free, but it was of no use. Neil felt the white void change as he went through a watery-like floor. It felt like he was drowning in paint. He was struggling to breathe as he was being pulled further and further down. As he was going down, he could hear a voice echoing through the waters. It was so powerful that the water shook like an earthquake. The voice kept saying, “You’re a failure.”

Hearing it made things even worse. Neil could feel he was losing consciousness.

***

On the other hand, Krystal woke up, feeling like she was smacked in the face. Her face felt sore. What was even weirder was she saw herself sitting on a set of railroad tracks. Before she could even think further, she could hear what sounded like a train ringing. She turned around, stunned to see that a train was indeed coming, and it was closer than she thought. Krystal got up to get off the tracks, but for some reason, she couldn’t get off them.

Krystal got up and started running while the train continued to come after her. She could feel her heartbeat race faster and faster as she kept running. She was surprised after running for a while because she hadn’t even been hit yet.

“Am I running fast or is this train running slow?!” Krystal cried.

Krystal could feel her legs were getting tired. She couldn’t keep up with the train any longer, and it wasn’t close to stopping. She didn’t even know where she was going. Beyond the railroad tracks, she saw trees and greenery on both sides, but it all looked the same. It was like she was on an endless train track.  She could feel she was getting slower, her legs tiring out. The train was nowhere near close to stopping though. As she slowed down, she could feel the train smack into her. She was stuck to the front of it, like her body had been frozen. She screamed as the train kept going.

***

Akira found herself on the beach. The sand was warm, and the ocean waves were calm. The calmness was too gentle for her. She had a hunch that something was up. As she got up, she could see that the gentle waves were suddenly becoming more monstrous. The closer she looked, she thought she could see a face in the water that was familiar. Akira was astonished as she recognized the molding of the face in the water. She couldn’t believe what she was seeing. A man’s voice started echoing from the water. It kept saying, “Come home. Come home, Akira.”

For a moment, she believed what she was hearing was real. However, as the water came closer to her, she realized something was off. She released her siren vocals, unleashing a massive sound wave through the waters as they made her way toward her. The sound waves protected her from the water, and she could see that the man she was seeing had disappeared.

“I knew he wasn’t real,” Akira said. “He wouldn’t actually want me home.”

Akira noticed the beach was suddenly calmer. It was as if a change in her perception had changed her atmosphere. She could see she was the only one at the beach, which made her wonder where the others were. She pondered over how they were all doing, especially Krystal since she thought she was quite the klutz on her own.

Suddenly, Akira could feel the sand of the beach shake between her toes. It was like an earthquake was happening. Everything surrounding her shifted in a pixelating manner. Before she could process it, she was in a completely different place. She could see she was standing right by a railroad track with a train speeding through it like lightning. As quick as it was, she was still able to see Krystal was hanging onto the front of the tree for dear life, screaming her head off.

“Krystal?!” Akira exclaimed. “How did I get to her just like that?!”

Akira quickly transformed into her siren form. She flapped her wings and began flying above the train, trying to reach Krystal. Once she got close to the front, she shouted, “Krystal, are you okay?”

“Do I look okay to you?!” Krystal shrieked. “And how are you here now?!”

“I’m still trying to figure that out. Can’t you get off?”

“No, I tried that. It’s like some barrier is preventing me. This thing doesn’t even end!”

Akira tried to think quickly. She wondered how she got to Krystal in the first place. It was then she recalled thinking about how Krystal was doing earlier. That was the moment she was brought to her. She even realized that the tsunami stopped once she realized what she was seeing wasn’t real.

“Krystal! I think I figured out what to do!”

“Does that involve saving me?! Because you’ve been hovering like a damn bird this whole time!”

“You’re gonna have to stop it.”

“What?! How?!”

“You just gotta trust yourself. This train isn’t real.”

“You’re not the one stuck on it!”

“I’m serious. What we’re seeing isn’t real, but this is your mind. You just gotta believe that.”

Krystal couldn’t fully understand what Akira was saying. The more she thought about it, the more she realized why she couldn’t move from the train or why the train wouldn’t stop. It was because she had been losing her grip on reality. She quickly tried to think of something that would make the train stop. Thinking about that made her brain hurt, so she started thinking of a happy place. A shopping trip to the mall would be great. She could just think of the great deals she could get on the new Reshawna handbag collection.

Suddenly, she looked ahead and saw the train, and everything was gone. She was in one of her favorite boutiques in the mall. Krystal turned to see Akira fly down, landing on the ground next to her.

“We’re in the mall now?” Krystal asked.

“No, remember it’s not real. Knowing you, your brain instantly thought of the mall, so it took us here.”

“So, we can’t go shopping?”

“I think we have bigger concerns. I don’t know how to explain it, but I think our brains have been intertwined somehow.”

“Huh?”

“Lyle must’ve put us in some psychological coma where all of us are stuck in these realities that feel real, but they aren’t. The only reason I got to you is because I was wondering where you were.”

“Aww, you were concerned about me?”

“Honestly, I thought you were a lost cause for a bit.”

“Hey!”

“The point is, I went from my mind to your mind. Now we have to jump to either Heer or Neil’s mind. I think that’s the only way we can get our consciences back to normal.”

“Wait, if Lyle put us in this linked coma thing, doesn’t he know that we know by now?”

“Maybe, but we have the edge now since we now know what we’re seeing isn’t real. I say we go to Heer next.”

“You’re right. Between her and Neil, her brain is probably less of a mess.”

“Okay, just think of seeing Heer. Got it?”

Krystal nodded. She instantly thought of Heer, hoping she was safe. Akira was wondering what kind of state she was in.

Suddenly, the reality surrounding Krystal and Akira shifted. It was the same feeling Akira felt when it happened to her. Krystal felt like she switched the channel on the television. Now they were in a bitter winter scene. Krystal could feel the chills as snow was quickly piling down.

“Sheesh. Why is Heer’s brain so cold?!” Krystal exclaimed as she started shivering.

“Forget that. We need to find her and wake her up, so we can go find Neil.”

“Well, where could she be?”

“She can’t be far. We imagined that we’d see her.”

“Oh no! What if Heer has been frozen in a huge chunk of ice, and the only way for her to break free is to be awoken by the chosen one in a thousand years?!”

“What have you been watching lately?”

“Rey makes me watch a lot of old cartoons during study sessions.”

As crazy as Krystal was sounding, Akira did begin to wonder if Heer was frozen somewhere. It would make the blistering cold atmosphere apt. She looked down on the ground, and she noticed some very faint footprints in the snow. As she looked ahead, she could see they continued further down.

“There are footprints here. It has to be Heer. Come on, let’s follow them.”

Akira and Krystal began walking along the footprints. As they kept going, Krystal thought she could see someone shivering in the distance. She instantly recognized the curly brown hair.

“Do you see her?” Krystal asked Akira. “She’s there!”

Krystal and Akira yelled out Heer’s name multiple times. It seemed she couldn’t hear them. Heer very much could hear something calling to her. She thought it was a familiar voice. It was one she had longed to hear for such a long time. Suddenly, the voices started to clash. She could hear Krystal and Akira’s voices overpowering her eardrums.

“Heer, can you not hear us?!” Krystal shouted.

“Guys, you don’t understand. He’s calling me,” Heer said.

“Heer, there is no one calling you,” Akira said. “It’s just us.”

“No, you’re wrong,” Heer said. “I heard him.”

“Look, everything except us is an illusion,” Krystal said. “We figured that out. Now, you have to.”

Krystal and Akira caught up with Heer, but she still wouldn’t look at them. It was as if she couldn’t even see they were there. Like she thought that they were the illusion instead of the voice she was hearing.

Heer could feel she was losing consciousness. She could feel the bitter cold was getting to her as she fell to her knees. The voice she was hearing became distorted. It wasn’t until she saw Akira and Krystal come up to her that she felt somewhat okay. She could actually see and feel their presence.

“You…you guys are really here,” Heer said.

“We are,” Akira said. “We’re the only things real here. You have to believe that.”

“Do you still hear that other voice?” Krystal asked.

“Not really,” Heer said. “I do feel really cold.”

“Well, we can escape the cold if we go to see Neil next,” Akira said. “Who knows what kind of state he’s in.”

“How…how do we…do that?” Heer asked as she was shivering.

“Just think about how you want to see Neil,” Akira said. “If we all do, we should be able to get to him. Hopefully before it’s too late.”

“What do you mean by too late?” Krystal asked.

“The longer he remains in the reality state increases the chances of trauma occurring to his mind,” Akira said. “It could be dangerous. Come on. Let’s do this.”

Heer tried to calm down and think of Neil. She decided not to let the bitter cold get to her as finding Neil was of the upmost of importance. Akira and Krystal followed the same. Suddenly, that spazzing feeling came again. Before they knew it, everything around them changed. Heer was stunned to see that she, Krystal, and Akira were underwater. There was no life to be seen. It was just a vast, endless body of water. At least it was until Heer could see Neil drowning deeper into the water. Heer pointed to him for Krystal and Akira to see. The three swam down as quickly as they could, getting close enough to him. All three of them grabbed hold of him, trying to pull him up.

However, something was holding Neil back. Heer could see there were hands pulling Neil back. She used all the strength she had to pull him away with Krystal and Akira helping out. Krystal quickly grabbed her wand, tapping it to transform it into her sonic bell. She rang it, allowing its soundwaves to strike the hands, making them let go. With Neil released from their grasp, the girls were able to pull Neil upward. Heer was struggling to figure things out as Neil was still completely out of it. She didn’t know if there was a surface for them to reach to. She figured that she had to get Neil to wake up if they actually wanted to get out. Heer concentrated her ice energy in her hand, placing it on Neil’s shoulder, allowing it to transfer from her to him. She hoped this would bring him back.

Damn. I feel like my body is melting, Neil thought. Is this what death feels like? I can’t…I can’t feel anything…

Neil could feel a jolt of energy shoot up inside of him. He opened his eyes, stunned to see Heer, Krystal, and Akira holding onto him. He realized just how out of it he had been. Seeing them helped him made him understand just how real they were. It was that feeling that made him feel like the surface was closer than ever.

And just like that, Neil, Heer, Krystal, and Akira all woke up in the classroom. They made it out of the ropes that initially had tied them down to their seats. They were all breathless with Neil unable to comprehend what he had just experienced. Before he could think too much about it, he saw Lyle. He wasn’t standing tall and powerful like before. Instead, he was on the ground just like them, seemingly out of breath and panting like crazy.

“Guys, look!” Neil exclaimed as he got up. The girls got up, all turning to see Lyle. Krystal found it almost laughable.

“Not so powerful anymore, are you?!” Krystal exclaimed.

“There’s no way you idiots could’ve broken out of the reality chamber,” Lyle said as he slowly tried to get up.

“You didn’t count on me figuring out what you were up to,” Akira said. “Next time you want to mess with someone’s head, know them better.”

“Okay, I don’t know about you guys, but I’m ready to kick his ass,” Krystal said.

“You bet,” Neil said.

“That won’t be necessary,” a voice said.

Neil, Heer, Krystal, and Akira turned around to see Headmaster Devil. The classroom turned back to normal. Everything was seemingly okay then. Neil figured it was Headmaster Devil’s doing.

“I never thought I’d see the day that I was happy to see you, sir,” Akira said.

“Ouch,” said Headmaster Devil.

“What are you doing here?” Neil asked.

“I’ve heard some chatter lately from students about Lyle. I was coming here to have a chat with him about all the complaints I’ve been getting about his abusive behavior,” Headmaster Devil said. “Is this how you attempt to teach my kids a lesson?”

Lyle didn’t say anything. He simply looked away, almost like a little boy who didn’t get the toy he wanted for Christmas.

“You kids go on. I’ll deal with him right now,” Headmaster Devil said.

“Finally! Guys, let’s make it to that shoe sale!” Krystal exclaimed as she grabbed the others by their hands, taking them out of the room.

***

On Monday morning, Neil cautiously entered the classroom for Energy Enhancement. Everyone, specifically his friends, were looking at him like he was trying to rob the place.

“Neil, what are you doing?” Sana questioned.

“I was looking out for him. I don’t know what Devil is planning to do about him,” Neil said.

“You don’t have to worry. Considering what he tried to pull, I doubt he’ll be welcomed back,” Akira said.

“I still don’t get what he was trying to do,” Neil said.

“Neil, he was trying to fry our brains,” Krystal said. “I swear, Devil better have him locked up.”

“Why would he do that though?” Heer asked. “I know he was cruel, but can someone really be that level of evil?”

“In this world, yeah,” Akira said.

“If Akira hadn’t figured out it was illusions that you guys were seeing, you all might not still be here,” Zayn said.

“How did you figure it out, Akira?” Rey asked.

“That’s something to be told another time,” Akira said.

“Really? You’re being the secretive one?” Prince questioned.

Suddenly, the rest of the kids began applauding. Neil turned around along with the others to see Professor Luna had returned.

“Oh my gosh, Professor Luna! I’m so happy you’re back!” Neil exclaimed. “I could just hug you!”

“Yeah, please don’t do that, Neil,” Professor Luna said as she settled down at her desk. “Though your enthusiasm is amusing.”

“So, is the evil man gone?” one of the students asked.

“After what happened with Mr. Lyle this past week, Headmaster Devil had him sent away. We can’t have that kind of behavior in this school. Also, you won’t have to worry about the assignment grades as I won’t be counting them considering how unjust they were,” Professor Luna said. “While I’m saddened that I had to cut my conference time short, I’m actually happy to be back with all of you.”

As Professor Luna was getting ready to start the lesson, Neil couldn’t help but think about everything that happened with Lyle. Everything in the illusion still bugged him. He even wondered if he’d encounter Lyle again, or someone like him. As his thoughts got restless, he looked at Heer, who looked back at him with a smile. She had the most reassuring smile. He remembered it was that same warmth that helped him survive the ordeal. He realized just how lucky he was to have her as his teammate.

A Not So Quiet Beach Day

“Come on, Prince!” Rey exclaimed as he tugged at Prince’s arm along with Neil.

No matter how much Rey and Neil pulled, Prince was as solid as a rock. He didn’t want to budge. With a day off from school, Rey and Neil wanted to go out for a beach day. It was something they needed with all the stress in their lives as of late.

“I don’t understand why you need me to come with you guys,” Prince said.

“Come on! It’ll be fun!” Neil exclaimed. “Besides, we want as much of the gang there as possible.”

“Heer, Zayn, and Akira are busy with homework. You definitely don’t have an excuse better than that,” Rey said.

“I do. I’m just not interested,” Prince said.

“You say that all the time!” Rey exclaimed. “It’ll be fun. We’ll hang at the beach while you just chill. You can relax as much as you want. Maybe even take a book.”

“Or a candy cane,” Neil said.

Prince sighed. He would rather stay in his room, but he also felt some relaxation elsewhere wouldn’t be a bad idea.

“Fine. I’ll go, but I’m just going to chill there,” Prince said. “Got it?”

“All right! We’re heading out in an hour, so be ready!” Rey exclaimed as he and Neil left the room.

***

In the late afternoon, Prince met up with Rey, Neil, Sana, and Krystal at the front of the academy. They headed downtown and boarded the bus. It didn’t take long for them to reach Swiftside Beach. As soon as the group arrived, no one was more excited than Krystal. She made her way towards the sand, saying, “Isn’t this so nice?! Zayn and the others are missing out!”

“Hell, I’m surprised Ms. Bookworm here wasn’t busy with homework,” Neil said, looking at Sana.

“Are you trying to say I don’t know how to have fun?” Sana asked.

“He isn’t trying. He’s just saying it,” Rey said.

“Well, let me prove you wrong then!” Sana exclaimed. “Who’s up for volleyball?”

“Sounds fun!” Krystal said. “Prince, join us!

Krystal and the others turned to see Prince was already settled. He laid on the towel he had set on the sand. Krystal said, “Prince, really?”

“I came here to relax,” Prince said as he got out a book from his backpack.

“Come on. Just one game,” Neil said.

“I’m good,” Prince said as he opened his book and began reading.

Rey, Neil, Sana, and Krystal walked off to set up for volleyball. Sana whispered to Rey, “Why did you invite Prince?”

“I thought he’d possibly lighten up and hang with us,” Rey said.

“You thought that by enticing him with relaxation only?” Neil asked. “And you guys make fun of my intelligence.”

“Who said that makes you any more intelligent, Neil?” Krystal said.

“You know what?! I’m gonna beat the crap out of you guys at volleyball!” Neil exclaimed.

“Dream on,” Krystal said.

As Rey, Krystal, and Neil got ready to start playing, Sana turned and looked at Prince. He didn’t seem bothered. If anything, he looked very much at peace, reading his book. She decided it was probably best to just leave him be.

Prince was deep into his book. He was reading a new novel called Lightning Strikes Silent Street by Rana Sandesh, and it was an engrossing read so far. He could feel the tension as he was getting through an intense chapter. The main character, Roohi, was wandering around in her apartment at night, unaware that someone was inside. As he got to the next page, he was startled as Sana, Krystal, Rey, and Neil were loudly commencing in their volleyball game.

“HA! We’re in the lead!” Krystal exclaimed after delivering a winning serve. She high-fived Sana while Rey and Neil looked ready to continue.

“It’s not over yet!” Neil exclaimed.

Prince shook his head as he looked back at his book. He tried to focus on the chapter. It was a lengthy read, but he was doing his best to pay attention while the others continued their game. After some time, his focus became disrupted again upon hearing Krystal shout, “Prince, watch out!”

“What?!” Prince said as he turned around. Before he could do anything, the ball smacked him in the head and he fell back, his book falling out of his hands.

Sana, Krystal, Rey, and Neil all ran up to Prince. Sana and Krystal helped him up with Sana asking, “Prince, are you okay?”

“If you want to get mad at someone, be mad at Neil! He served the ball!” Rey exclaimed.

“Really, dude?! You gotta blame me?!” Neil said.

“Well, you’re the one who threw it,” Rey said.

Prince hadn’t said a word. He was feeling a variety of things, but he was mostly agitated and angry. His head hurt, and he lost his place in his book, which was now dunked in sand. The others looked at him, and Rey and Neil looked particularly fearful of him. Maybe his agitation and anger were showing on his face.

“You know what?” Prince said. “I’m just gonna go get something to drink.”

Prince left while the others watched him leave. As he headed off, Neil said, “Damn. Is it me, or did he look mad?”

“It’s either that, or he’s annoyed. Probably both,” Krystal said.

“What should we do?” Sana asked.

“We should just leave him alone for a while,” Rey said. “Let’s get back to our game.”

“You guys go ahead. I’m gonna get a drink,” Sana said.

Krystal, Rey, and Neil got the ball and got back to their game. Sana picked up Prince’s book. She headed out towards the snack shack where Prince was at. He was drinking a large strawberry lemonade, and Sana could tell he was very irritated. She went up to him, handing him his book. Prince looked at her and took the book, saying, “Thanks.”

“How’s the book so far?” Sana asked.

“It was good until certain idiots smacked me in the head and made me lose my place.”

“Sorry. I know they can be a handful, but they didn’t mean to hit you.”

“So? They literally made me come here just to annoy the hell out of me. All I care about is relaxing. Is that so much to ask?”

“Is there something going on? You’re crabbier than usual.”

“Oh, wow, that’s so helpful.”

“Come on. Seriously, is something bothering you?”

Prince finished his strawberry lemonade. He got out of his seat and headed out while Sana watched him leave. He had a hard time explaining how he was feeling. He certainly felt that whatever he was feeling was nothing compared to the stuff that Sana and Rey had dealt with recently.

As Prince got back to where his towel and things were, he saw Krystal, Rey, and Neil were out in the water, swimming. They were having a lot of fun, splashing each other and everything. Krystal looked at Prince and said, “Hey, Prince! Do you want to join us?”

“I’m fine,” Prince said as he tried to figure out where he was in his book.

“You came to the beach, and you won’t even get in the water?” Krystal asked.

“Some people come to the beach to just chill. It’s clear you guys don’t get that,” Prince said.

“Hey, man! I know you’re upset, but you don’t have to be a jerk,” Rey said.

“Oh, right. I should be an absolute ray of sunshine after getting smacked in the head during your stupid game of volleyball,” Prince said.

“It was an accident,” Neil said. “I didn’t mean to hit you.”

“Oh, like that’s supposed to make me feel better,” Prince said.

“Okay, enough of the arguing!” Krystal exclaimed. “You can just sulk while we have some fun here!”

“To hell with the drama,” Prince said as he rolled his eyes and went back to focusing on his book.

While Prince tried to find the page he was on in his book, a gust of wind wavered over the waters. Prince was splashed by the water, himself and his book drenched. Prince could see the others look at him, clearly horrified. Though they were probably more horrified at how mad he would be. He got up, grabbing his book and towel. Sana was there and asked, “You need help?”

Prince sighed. He didn’t want to admit it, but he could use some time with a friend.

“Yeah,” Prince said.

***

Sana got her things and walked further down the beach with Prince to get a private spot for himself. She helped him dry off, using his towel to dry his hair. As she helped, she said, “I’m sorry this beach day hasn’t been going well for you.”

“It’s not your fault. Karma must hate me or something.”

“Don’t say that. Now, you did take my help. Is there anything you want to talk about?”

“I don’t even know how to explain it.”

“That’s fine. You just take your time with it.”

Prince took a deep breath. He wasn’t really used to opening up about his feelings to anyone. Sana was cool though, and he did think she was a relatively easy person to talk to. He said, “I’ve been feeling pretty tired lately.”

“You mean like tired as in annoyed? Or tired as in exhausted?”

“I don’t know. Maybe both. I don’t even know how I can talk about this with you specifically.”

“Why do you say that?”

“Well, you and Rey have gone through a lot with the whole Madame Naga fiasco. My struggles are nothing compared to yours. I’m not like doing horribly, but I also feel like so much has been happening, and I just want a break.”

“Prince, whatever you feel is just as valid as what me and Rey are feeling. I’ll admit, things have been pretty hard with all the new revelations, but that doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to feel tired. In fact, I think the entire group has been affected one way or the other. We just have to stick by each other through all of it.”

Prince agreed with everything Sana was saying. He realized he should’ve known Sana would care. She was a very caring person after all.

“So, I guess that’s why you wanted the perfect beach day all to yourself,” Sana said.

“I just wanted to relax and not think about anything. You guys love hanging out and spending time together, but sometimes I just enjoy being alone.”

“I understand.”

“Anyway, thanks for hearing me out.”

“Of course. That’s what friends do.”

Prince looked up, seeing Krystal, Rey, and Neil walking over to him. Neil said, “Hey, man. I’m sorry about earlier.”

“We should’ve been more direct with our apology,” Rey said.

“Thanks. I appreciate it,” Prince said.

Rey nudged Krystal. She said, “And I’m sorry for mocking you for wanting to be alone.”

“Look at that. Krystal can shake away her ego,” Sana said.

“Oh, shut up, Sana!” Krystal exclaimed.

Prince was pleased with his friends’ apologies. He did think that he should apologize as well.

“I’m sorry, too,” Prince said. “I shouldn’t have been so crabby with you guys.”

“Hey, it’s all good, dude,” Rey said. “We’re all cool here!”

“Anyway, we were gonna go to Devil’s Diner for dinner. Zayn, Akira, and Heer said they can join us there,” Neil said. “You guys want to go?”

“I’m cool with that,” Sana said. “Prince, since you wanted to have some alone time here, you don’t have to come if you don’t want to.”

Prince was surprised at Sana’s gesture.

“Really?” Prince asked.

“Yeah, man. If you want some alone time here, it’s totally cool with us,” Rey said.

“Well, thank you then,” Prince said.

“All right. See you later then,” Krystal said as she headed off with Rey and Neil.

Sana went up to Prince, taking out a book from her bag and handing it to him. Prince looked at it, seeing it was a Rana Sandesh novel titled Silence Sounds Swell.

“I like Rana Sandesh books myself. It may not be the same one as what you were reading, but I figured you could read it until you get a new copy of the other one,” Sana said.

“Thank you, Sana. This is nice of you.”

“No problem. See you tomorrow then.”

“Actually, maybe I’ll join you guys later. After some time that is.”

“Okay. See you.”

After Sana left, Prince was by himself. It was a good kind of solitude. He finally had some peace all to himself.

When Friends Fight

“No! No! No!” Krystal cried. “Sana, how many times do I have to tell you?!”

It was a regular morning at Ringmasters Training Academy. In the gymnasium, Krystal was directing everyone for a stage rehearsal. The next circus show was coming up and Krystal was made lead ringmaster. Sana, Rey, Prince, Neil, Heer, and Akira were all present for rehearsal amongst other students.

“Krystal, I’m literally doing everything you want me to do,” Sana said.

“No, you’re not!” Krystal exclaimed. “In step three of section one, you’re supposed to pivot your foot to the left. You keep starting with your right! It’s ruining the flow of the routine!”

“It’s really not that big of a deal,” Prince said. “Who the hell is gonna pay attention to her foot going wrong?”

“Well, if I can see it, anyone can,” Krystal said.

“Aww, Miss Perfectionist is throwing a tantrum,” Rey said to Neil, chuckling.

Krystal turned to Rey, annoyed, and said, “Rey, I’m this close to smacking someone, so you better hope it’s not you!”

“At this rate it could be you,” Sana said, quietly.

Krystal looked at Sana, trying to think she didn’t hear what she heard. Akira could see Krystal was getting angry and said, “Okay, Krystal. Let’s not create a scene.”

“What was that you said, Sana?” Krystal questioned.

“Krystal, I really think you should take a breather,” Heer said. “Let’s just get back to rehearsal.”

“No! I’d like to know what she said!” Krystal exclaimed.

“Damn. This is gonna get ugly,” Neil whispered to Rey.

“Krystal, I’m already annoyed. Let’s just move on,” Sana said.

“No! You can’t just say something about me and get away from the situation!”

   “This is so unnecessary.”

“Please. The only thing unnecessary around here is your inability to comprehend basic dance steps! One would think a bookworm such as yourself could at least do that.”

Before Krystal could say anything else, Sana smacked her on the head, and she fell to the floor with a thud. Rey looked at the others and could see everyone including the gang were shocked. Krystal immediately got up, appalled.

“How dare you smack me, Sana?!” Krystal shouted as she was about to go up to Sana with her hands ready to fight back. Heer and Prince quickly grabbed hold of Krystal by her arms to prevent her from escalating the scene.

“Krystal, you have to calm down now,” Heer said as she struggled to hold down Krystal.

“Ugh! Let me at her! Just let me at her!” Krystal exclaimed.

“Ugh. Quit embarrassing yourself,” Prince said, rolling his eyes.

“You’re the one who basically asked for it,” Sana said to Krystal.

“Damn, Sana. You seem to go off on anyone,” Akira said.

“Man, this really did get ugly,” Neil said to Rey.

“Okay, everyone! Why don’t we call off rehearsal today?” Rey exclaimed. “Let’s all head out now!”

Rey tried to get everyone else to leave while Heer and Prince took Krystal away.

***

Later on, at lunch, Rey, Neil, Prince, Heer, and Akira were seated at their usual table. Once Zayn arrived with his lunch, he sat down and said, “So, it seems I missed quite the drama this morning.”

   “You heard?” Neil asked.

“People couldn’t stop gossiping about it when I was in line,” Zayn said as he took a bite of his grilled cheese sandwich.

“You never said why you didn’t show up to rehearsal,” Akira said.

“I didn’t show up because I didn’t feel like it,” Zayn said. “So, what happened?”

“Krystal got on Sana’s case. Sana smacked her. There was almost a brawl. End of story,” Prince said. “It’s really not that big of a deal.”

“You’re taking it quite lightly, Prince,” Heer said.

“Well, yeah. Sana smacking people when they piss her off isn’t new,” Prince said. “Just ask Rey.”

“To be honest, I thought she was improving,” Rey said.

“Is it really any different from you and Neil jumping Aiden all the time?” Akira asked.

“Hey! We would give him a heads up before attempting to battle him!” Rey exclaimed.

“Failed attempts are more like it,” Prince said.

It didn’t take long for Sana to arrive at the table. And right after her, Krystal arrived. The two sat across from each other and Rey could see them exchanging scowled glances. To break the awkward silence amongst everyone, Rey said, “So, did anyone do the homework for D’Sena’s class?”

“You didn’t do it, man?” Neil asked.

“Interesting coming from you since you’re not one to do homework,” Prince said.

“But I did do it…last period,” Neil said.

“So, Sana, did you do the homework?” Heer asked.

“Why are we talking to her like she didn’t smack me in front of everyone today?” Krystal questioned.

“The same way no one wants to tell you how annoying and bossy you are,” Sana said.

“You take that back!” Krystal shouted as she got up from her seat. As she got up, she threw her sandwich at Sana’s face.

The act got Rey and everyone else on edge. It didn’t do much to Sana, but Rey looked at her and she was visibly pissed. He watched her stand up from her chair. She looked like she was close to giving Krystal another slap. Instead, she grabbed one of the slices of pizza on her plate and smacked it directly onto Krystal’s face. Seeing this, Rey could see it was far worse. The sauce and cheese were all over Krystal’s face. It didn’t take long for her to shriek, “Not my makeup!”

“Oh God,” Prince said, shaking his head.

“Sana J. Malik, if my face wasn’t melting right now, you’d be dead!” Krystal exclaimed.

“Yeah, right,” Sana said, rolling her eyes.

Rey watched Sana and Krystal throw one comment after the next at each other like ammo on a battlefield. He looked at the others and could see how annoyed they all were. Except Heer, she just seemed concerned. He thought he would have to take matters into his own hands.

***

At the end of the school day, Heer and Akira were at their lockers, chatting while getting their stuff together. As they were talking, Heer turned to see Rey was coming up to them. She looked at him and said, “Hey, Rey. What’s up?”

“Can I talk to you guys for a sec?” Rey asked.

“Is this about the Sana and Krystal fiasco?” Akira asked. “Because while entertaining, that whole thing is a mess.”

“I know. And we need to do something about it,” Rey said. “As stubborn as they both are, they’re friends and need to move on.”

“Even I think something needs to be done,” Heer said.

“Did you talk to the guys about this?” Akira asked.

“Yeah, and they don’t want to get involved,” Rey said.

   “Even Prince?” Heer asked.

“He said they should figure it out themselves,” Prince said.

“Well, he’s not wrong,” Akira said. “I could expect this childishness from Krystal, but Sana, she’s typically above this…when she’s not being overly aggressive.”

“Well, we should give them a push. That’s why I’m coming to you both,” Rey said. “Can you two plan something to get them to confront each other civilly?”

“That could be a good idea. If we get them together in a calm environment, we could get them to talk things out,” Heer said.

“That sounds good!” Rey exclaimed. “Have fun with that!”

“Hold it! You come to us asking for help and you’re not going to do anything?” Akira asked.

“I did my part,” Rey said. “I was the messenger.”

Rey walked away before Akira’s piercing glances could scare him into staying. Akira shook her head and said, “Boys just love not taking responsibility sometimes, I swear.”

“I think I have an idea that could work,” Heer said.

***

The next day, Heer and Akira set the plan in motion. Well, it was pretty much Heer’s plan. Heer invited Krystal to Sage Park downtown and Akira did the same with Sana. They brought both girls to the park right after school. Once they all ran into each other, Heer could see Sana and Krystal were instantly heated.

“What is she doing here?!” Krystal exclaimed.

“I could ask the same to you,” Sana said.

Akira rolled her eyes as she watched Sana and Krystal have a literal glare competition. Heer said, “Now, now. It’s a nice day out and the park is looking lovely. Why don’t we just enjoy the scenery?”

Sana sighed in frustration. “Fine, I’ll be civil,” Sana said as she walked ahead. “I can do that better than some people.”

“Oh, please! You are the last person that should be talking about being civil!” Krystal exclaimed as she started walking as well.

“You sure this will work?” Akira asked Heer.

“We’re in the presence of nature. It should calm them both down,” Heer said and then walked with Sana and Krystal.

“If you say so,” Akira said as she shrugged her shoulders and followed.

As the girls walked around the park, Sana and Krystal were keeping their distance. Heer could feel that there was an unusual amount of silence as they all walked together. She looked at Akira, who was visibly frustrated. She knew she had to do something to get Sana and Krystal to talk like normal. Heer looked at the array of pink tulips in the field. She said, “Aren’t these some beautiful flowers, Krystal?”

“Hmm? Oh yeah, they are nice,” Krystal said as she looked at the tulips. “They’re so bright and beautiful!”

“Do you like them, Sana?” Heer asked.

“Heer, why do you care about her opinion?” Krystal asked. “After all, it’s not like a brute such as herself could appreciate nature.”

“You know, I was going to say they look beautiful,” Sana said. “Maybe I should add that they’re prettier than your face.”

Once again, another argument ensued between Sana and Krystal. Heer began to whimper, seeing her plan was failing miserably. Akira looked at her and shook her head, thinking, They are fighting over flowers. It’s time to put an end to this.

“Okay!” Akira intervened, silencing Sana and Krystal. “Since you guys aren’t enjoying the park, I have another place in mind for us to go.”

***

Sana was stunned, Krystal was shocked, and Heer was surprised. Akira led the girls inside Splash Attack, a paintball center in Daredevil City. Heer would’ve never picked such a place for them to handle the situation, but she acknowledged Akira’s methods were probably going to be different from hers.

“Um, why are we here, Akira?” Sana asked.

“You guys clearly need to blow some steam,” Akira said as she stepped up to the counter. “If you can’t do it peacefully, you might as well come here. Krystal, give me your credit card.”

“What?!” Krystal exclaimed. “Why would I give you my credit card?! This wasn’t my idea.”

“That’s true, but if you don’t want me to smack you harder than Sana did, you’ll give it to me,” Akira said.

Terrified at the thought of Akira smacking her, Krystal quickly handed her credit card to her Akira handed it to the receptionist. After paying, they were directed to a room to get their gear and suits. As Sana and Krystal went ahead, Heer asked Akira, “Are you sure about this?”

“They want to be aggressive,” Akira said. “This is how you get out aggression.”

The girls got suited up and loaded up their paintball guns. They went outside to the actual park where people were already commencing in paintball fights. While Sana and Krystal were in the field, Akira went in blazing. She was having a grand time, striking one person after the next. She took a moment to stop as she looked at Heer, who looked like a frail deer amongst a pack of lions. She went up to her and said, “Heer, why aren’t you shooting?”

“Um, I’m not sure if this is my scene. I don’t really like hurting people unnecessarily.”

“Oh, come on, Heer. They’re just paintballs.”

“I know. But this is pretty aggressive.”

“That’s the point. Hey, we should check on Sana and Krystal.”

Akira and Heer went further into the field to look for Sana and Krystal. As she squared off with a few people amidst the lookout, Akira stopped upon seeing Sana and Krystal engaging in a shootout with each other. Aside from them having bad aim, it seemed like they were both pretty angry.

“You know, I should thank Akira after this,” Krystal said.

   “After what?” Sana asked.

Krystal struck Sana in the stomach three times with her paintball gun and said, “That.”

Sana immediately got up and started hitting back. This time, she hit Krystal at her shoulders. They both started angrily shooting at each other. Heer was afraid of what would ensue, and Akira was borderline amused and annoyed.

“You know, only someone as immature as you would resort to smacking people for everything!” Krystal shouted at Sana.

“Immature? That’s rich coming from you. You’re the spoiled crybaby that whines whenever Prince doesn’t want to wear a stupid matching outfit with you.”

“That has nothing to do with this! And you wish you had my sense of style!”

“Oh, please. I don’t need fashion advice from a designer brand billboard.”

“You take that back! You’re just jealous! No wonder you ruined my dress at Headmaster Devil’s birthday party!”

“Oh, get over it. You took it to the dry-cleaners.”

“Yeah, but the resale value plummeted thanks to you!”

Sana and Krystal continued to argue and strike each other with paintballs at the same time. Heer looked at Akira, who was more frustrated than ever. Akira handed her paintball gun to Heer and walked up to Sana and Krystal. She took both of their paintball guns and they turned to her, saying, “Hey!”

“What are you doing?” Sana asked.

“You know, I should smack both of you right now,” Akira said. “But I’m not going to stoop to your level.”

“I haven’t done any smacking this whole time,” Krystal said. “I was the one that was wronged here.”

“Honestly, you both need to shut up,” Akira said. “I’m gonna say this to your faces, so that you two can stop embarrassing yourselves. Sana, you don’t need to smack every person who pisses you off for the slightest thing. It’s unbelievably childish.”

   “Um, Akira,” Heer said.

“And Krystal, you’re bossy, rude, and you shove your perfectionist ways down everyone’s throat to the point where it’s annoying,” Akira said. “Heer and I took it upon ourselves to help you guys make up since Rey asked us to. Now we understand why he didn’t want to get involved because you two are irritating as hell. I’m done dealing with your stupidity. So, do everyone a favor and just shut up and sort this out yourselves.”

Akira walked out, leaving Heer, Sana, and Krystal. Heer could see Sana and Krystal were speechless and in disbelief.

***

After some time passed, Sana, Krystal, and Heer got cleaned up and sat in the lobby. After storming out, Akira went back to the field to play some more paintball. Heer figured she needed it to blow off some steam from her earlier lecture. Heer looked at Sana and Krystal, who were awfully quiet and clearly down. She wanted to say something to lighten the mood, but thought it was better to wait and see if one of them would talk.

“She really went in on us,” Sana said.

“I’m not bossy and rude,” Krystal said. “Am I, Heer?”

“Well, I wouldn’t have framed the way Akira said things so bluntly,” Heer said.

“So, you agree with her?” Sana asked.

“I agree with the notion she was going with. You both are wrong in this situation. One of you wants to feel more justified than the other, but neither of you are,” Heer said. “I know you’re both better than this. You two have been friends for so long that you can’t let something like this drag on.”

Sana couldn’t help but think that what Heer was saying was true. She couldn’t believe how far things had gotten. She looked at Krystal and could tell she was feeling the same way.

“You know, if it was put this way, it probably would’ve landed better,” Krystal said.

“Maybe. But Akira’s method certainly made you guys listen,” Heer said.

Sana and Krystal chuckled. They looked at each other and Sana said, “I’m sorry for smacking you that day. And for all the insults that I didn’t mean.”

“I’m sorry for being harsh on you at rehearsal and my share of insults. I guess I should work on not bossing people around like a crazy person.”

“I should probably work on not smacking people.”

“I know some people that would love that,” Heer said.

The three of them chuckled. Akira entered the lobby and upon seeing the three girls, she said, “So, you two made up?”

   “Yeah, we did,” Krystal said.

“As much as we hate to admit it, you certainly made us wake up a bit,” Sana said.

“Good. I should be blunt with you guys more often,” Akira said.

“Or you can hold back next time,” Krystal said.

“Anyway, do you guys want to head back?” Heer asked.

“Well, since Sana and Krystal made up, we should do something fun to celebrate,” Akira said.

“I agree,” Sana said. “You got something in mind, Krystal?”

“Actually, you can take the reign on this one, Sana,” Krystal said.

Sana was surprised, but happy with Krystal’s gesture. She said, “Well, I did want to check out the new indie bookstore that opened downtown.”

   “Books A Plenty?” Heer asked.

“That’s the one,” Sana said. “And maybe afterwards, we could go to Devil’s Diner for dinner.”

“Yes! I can treat everyone to Marigold Surprises!” Krystal exclaimed.

“You guys okay with that plan?” Sana asked.

“It sounds good to me,” Heer said.

“All right. Let’s head out then,” Akira said.

With that, the girls all headed out together for grand night ahead.

Prince’s Valentine’s Day

“Pink or red, guys?” Krystal asked Rey and Prince. It was a Sunday afternoon in Daredevil City. Krystal, Rey, and Prince were at the Reshawna store inside Daredevil Mall. Krystal had dragged the two along for a shopping trip. She was hoping to buy a new outfit for Valentine’s Day.

“Hello?!” Krystal exclaimed. “Did you guys hear me?”

“We did. I just don’t understand what the big deal is,” Prince said. “Buy whatever you want.”

“I’m asking for your opinion!” Krystal said.

“I like the red, but I think the pink one brings out your eyes,” Rey said.

“See, Prince! Rey is giving a solid opinion here,” Krystal said.

“Fine. You want my opinion?” Prince said. “The red one makes you look like a firetruck and the pink one makes you look like a flamingo. Happy?”

Krystal could feel the anger in her boil up. She couldn’t stand the attitude Prince was giving her and she certainly didn’t like being called a firetruck or a flamingo. She calmed down and said, “Prince, you don’t need to have an attitude.”

“You’re the one who dragged us both here,” Prince said. “Don’t be surprised that I’m not exactly ecstatic right now.”

“That’s because everyone else was busy,” Krystal said. “I have to have the perfect dress for Valentine’s Day.”

“It’s not like you have a date or anything,” Prince said as he started chewing on a lemon-flavored candy cane.

Krystal could feel her irritation get to the brim. Even Rey took note of how annoyed she was by Prince’s words.

“So?! Are you trying to say I need to have a date to look good on Valentine’s Day?!” Krystal exclaimed.

“No,” Prince said. “I just don’t understand the effort. That too for such a lame holiday.”

“Oh, someone has beef with Valentine’s,” Rey chuckled.

Prince didn’t say anything. He rolled his eyes, turning away. The only way to deal with the situation was to not look at anyone.

Krystal, in her frustration, said, “Whatever. I’m just gonna go with the pink one.”

Krystal headed back to the fitting room to change. Rey looked over at Prince and said, “So, are you coming for lunch?”

“Nah, I’m gonna slip out now,” Prince said as he got up. “I need to do some things before tomorrow. See ya.”

Prince left and Rey watched him leave. He shook his head, knowing Krystal was going to have a tantrum once she stepped out. And the moment she came out of the dressing room, she said, “Did he seriously leave before lunch?!”

   “He said he was busy.”

“Busy?! Ha! All he does is sleep and eat candy canes. What could possibly keep him busy?”

   “So, now what?”

“I’m gonna pay for this and we’ll go to lunch.”

    “Just us?”

“Well, I’m not going to lunch alone! Or are you busy as well?”

Rey thought he could make something up, but he did feel bad about Prince ditching. Plus, there was the possibility of Krystal paying.

“No, I’ll tag along,” Rey said.

***

The next day, it was Valentine’s Day. It seemed like a normal day at Ringmasters Training Academy, but there were some students engaging in the exchanging of cards, candy, and flowers. Prince was certainly not one of them. He went to his locker and opened it, looking at all the candy he had stocked up. He had boxes of chocolates and a box of Valentine’s Day themed candy canes that were hard to find. Prince took one of the candy canes from the box. As he started chewing it, Neil walked by along with Rey and said, “Whoah, Prince. Look at all the candy. You have a valentine?”

   “Yeah,” Prince said. “Myself.”

“Did you really think Prince was into Valentine’s Day?” Rey asked Neil, chuckling.

“Well, he seems to be…for the candy at least,” Neil said. “Can I have some?”

“Do you think I hoarded all the leftover candy at the grocery store just to share it with people?” Prince asked.

   “Well, damn,” Rey said.

Neil whimpered and said, “Sheesh, Prince. You don’t have to be so mean.”

“What else can you expect from him?” a voice said.

Krystal showed up with Sana and Heer at her side. She was proudly wearing the new outfit she bought the other day, but she was indeed upset.

“What do you mean by that?” Prince asked.

“You know exactly what I’m talking about.”

“Is this about yesterday? You’re really upset about that?”

“Yes, I’m upset. And since I’m upset, you should wait two to three business days before fighting me on it.”

   “Damn,” Rey said.

“Okay, what’s going on here?” Neil asked.

“I don’t have time for this,” Prince said as he shook his head. He grabbed his books and some candy from his locker and then slammed it shut, leaving.

“Well, that certainly didn’t go well,” Sana said.

   “Who cares?!” Krystal exclaimed.

“Krystal, I know you’re upset with Prince, but maybe you guys could talk it out?” Heer asked.

“Heer, I don’t have the energy to talk to him,” Krystal said. “I’d rather enjoy my Valentine’s Day in peace.”

“Do you even have a valentine?” Neil asked Krystal.

“Who says I need to have one to enjoy the festivities?! Sheesh!” Krystal exclaimed. She left the group, feeling even more annoyed.

“Wow. I’ve never seen her this mad,” Sana said. “She doesn’t even get this mad when directing a circus show.”

“Sana, she doesn’t even get this mad when Prince won’t wear the matching outfits she buys him,” Rey said.

“You know, I wish she would gift me new outfits. I would at least wear them,” Neil said. “I don’t have any money for shopping.”

“Guys, shouldn’t we do something?” Heer asked. “It’s not good for them to have tension like this.”

“Yeah. Like talking to them is gonna be something easy to do,” Rey said.

“No, Heer is right. We should do something,” Sana said. “I think I have an idea.”

***

Later, at the end of the school day, Prince went to his locker to retrieve the remaining boxes of candy he had. As he was getting everything together in his backpack, he could feel someone was coming up to him. He turned around to see Heer standing before him. He was surprised to see her. Prince said, “Heer…what brings you to my locker?”

“I hope I’m not bothering you.”

   “No, you’re not. What’s up?”

“Are you doing anything right now? I could use some help if you’re free.”

   “Help with what exactly?”

“I’m volunteering for a class at an elementary school today. The kids there are having a Valentine’s Day party and I need to take some baked goods I made. Do you mind helping me?”

Prince sighed. He was planning to go back to his dorm to work on some homework and finish his candy. And he very well could do that, but at the same time, he didn’t think it was right to say no to helping Heer out.

“I guess I can help you out,” Prince said.

“Great,” Heer said. “We can go to my room and get them.”

Prince nodded and followed Heer down the hallway.

***

On the other hand, Sana, Rey, Krystal, and Neil had gone to Lola’s. Sana thought a hangout with Krystal could help her cool down from her anger with Prince. It was also a good way to talk things out with her while Heer handled things with Prince. As they passed by the candy aisle, Rey said, “Wow. Prince wasn’t kidding when he said he hoarded all what was left of the Valentine’s Day candy.”

Sana shoved Rey in the arm with her elbow. She directed his attention to Krystal, who shifted from being perfectly calm to frustrated again.

   “Nice work,” Sana said.

“Hey, I was just saying,” Rey said.

“Rey’s right. It’s not like Prince is one to share,” Krystal said as she looked at a pink teddy bear on the middle shelf. “In fact, he’s the least caring person I know.”

“Come on, Krystal,” Neil said. “You don’t mean that.”

“Yes, I do!” Krystal exclaimed. “He’s a big jerk! I can’t believe we’re even partners!”

“Krystal, remember, you two do make a good team,” Sana said. “A unique team certainly…but a good team nonetheless.”

“It doesn’t matter!” Krystal exclaimed as she grabbed hold of the pink teddy bear. “It doesn’t change the fact that he’s a jerk!”

“Oh, sheesh,” Neil said. “Is it really that big of a deal? I mean you did drag him to the mall.”

Rey looked at Neil, knowing he shouldn’t have said what he said. Sana shook her head, seeing Krystal get even more angry than before. Neil could tell he messed up, seeing her face get red.

“Not a big deal?! You really have the nerve to say its not a big deal?!” Krystal yelled. As she yelled, Krystal ripped the head of the pink teddy bear. She only realized it upon seeing the faces of her friends.

“Damn, Krystal. You don’t have to take it out on the bear,” Rey said.

“And now you’re gonna have to pay for it,” Sana said.

“Ugh!” Krystal exclaimed. “Neil, why did you have to set me off?!”

“I didn’t know you’d act so ballistic,” Neil said.

“Um, its Krystal,” Rey said. “How could you not know that?”

“What did you just say, Rey?!” Krystal said.

“Nothing, nothing at all!” Rey exclaimed.

Sana shook her head. I swear, these two aren’t the brightest bulbs sometimes, she thought. I hope Heer has an easier time handling Prince.

Heer and Prince took a bus from the academy to reach Lillian Crossing Elementary School. The two got off the bus, each holding three boxes of pastries and baked goods that Heer made. Heer led them inside the school building and walked all the way to room 3B. As soon as they entered the classroom, they were welcomed by several children. Heer was happy to see all the kids. She had gotten to know them through the many times she had visited. She could tell it was something new for Prince, who seemed overwhelmed by all the attention.

Heer saw the classroom teacher, Ms. Williams, walk up to her. She had dark eyes and curly brown hair. She was wearing a beautiful flowy red dress with a pink heart pattern in spirit of the holiday.

   “Hi, Ms. Williams,” Heer said.

“Hello, Heer,” Ms. Williams said. “Thank you so much for bringing your amazing treats. Is this a friend of yours?”

“Yes, this is Prince,” Heer said. “He goes to RTA with me.”

   “Hi,” Prince said.

“Nice to meet you, Prince. I’m glad you could join us,” Ms. Williams said. “You guys can set up everything on the table right over there.”

“Sounds good. Thank you,” Heer said as she moved towards the table in the corner with Prince following.

Ms. Williams got all the kids together and had them settle down while Heer and Prince started setting up. There were plenty of items to unpack. Heer took out the cookies and cherry tarts while Prince got out the cupcakes and brownies. Prince couldn’t believe that Heer had made so much. He knew she was an avid baker, but this felt like a whole catering job. Once everything was set, Ms. Williams had the kids get their treats. Heer and Prince helped with serving. Even though Prince could’ve been chilling back at his dorm, he didn’t completely mind helping Heer.

“So, are you having a good time?” Prince asked Heer.

“Yeah, this is nice. I’m glad the kids are having fun.”

“I gotta ask you something. What made you decide to volunteer for this?”

“Do you see the boy over there in the purple cat shirt?”

Prince looked at the kids to see who Heer was referring to. He did see the boy in the purple cat shirt. He had the biggest smile on his face as he dove right into the pink frosted cupcake. The boy had scraggly black hair and big chocolate brown eyes.

“That’s Karthi,” Heer said. “One day, I went for a walk at the park nearby and he was there with some kids. He was getting picked on, so I stepped in and helped him out. He wanted me to come to the school and meet Ms. Williams and the other kids. So, I just like to come by and help out every now and then when I can.”

Prince wasn’t surprised that Heer had so much kindness in her. What did surprise him was how much she could do for those who weren’t even close to her.

“Something on your mind, Prince?” Heer asked.

“I hate admitting it. But the whole thing with Krystal does bother me. I don’t know why she has to be so dramatic sometimes.”

“She’s Krystal. It’s just how she is.”

“I know, but she doesn’t have to get mad at me. She’s the one that dragged me to the mall to begin with. Hell, she drags me everywhere.”

“I understand where you’re coming from. Have you ever thought about why she’s like that?”

   “Why? Do you know?”

“I think she just wants to feel like she’s friends with you. You’re not the most outgoing person, so she probably feels like she has to drag you around to wherever she wants to go. She’s your partner, so it makes sense that she wants to feel like she matters to you.”

   “Matters to me?”

“Yeah. Neil may do some crazy antics, but I always want to be there to look out for him. And I know he’d do the same for me. For Krystal, being your partner also means being your friend. Now, she could definitely approach this in better ways, but I think she does what she does because that’s what she knows.”

Prince was surprised. He could understand Heer’s perspective. He hadn’t even thought about seeing things from that angle. As he thought over what Heer said, Karthi walked up to Heer. She looked at him and said, “Are you having fun, Karthi?”

“Yes,” Karthi said. “Thank you for the treats.”

“It was my pleasure,” Heer said.

“Hey,” Prince said. “Your name is Karthi?”

“Yes,” Karthi said. “What’s your name?”

“I’m Prince,” Prince said. “You want to see something?”

Karthi nodded his head. Prince got his backpack, unzipped it, and took out one of the Valentine’s Day candy canes he had. He could already tell Karthi was in awe of it.

“These are special candy canes. They’re pretty hard to find,” Prince said. “You want it?”

Karthi nodded happily. Prince handed the candy cane to him. He got out the box from his backpack and handed it to Karthi saying, “Can you give these to everyone else?”

Karthi took the box from Prince and went off, handing the candy canes to his classmates. Heer was surprised by Prince’s gesture. She looked at him and said, “Wow. This is a first.”

“Oh, come on,” Prince said. “I can be nice. Now tell me, where did you find the time to make all of this?”

“I like to bake after school. It helps me relax after a long day of school,” Heer said.

“Interesting way to relax,” Prince said as he took a bite out of one of the cupcakes.

Back at the dorms of Ringmasters Training Academy, Krystal was painting her nails, trying to relax. She was finishing up the last of her fingernails when the sound of a knock on her door made her mess up. “Great, now my nails are ruined,” Krystal said as she got up from her vanity chair. “Ugh!”

Krystal walked up to the door and opened it. She was surprised to see Prince was there. She folded her arms and said, “Yes?”

Prince cleared his throat. He took a few seconds of silence before saying anything.

“I’m sorry,” Prince said. “I shouldn’t have been so rude to you the other day.”

Krystal was surprised to hear Prince apologize. She could tell he was being sincere, and it meant a lot to her. She smiled and said, “It’s okay.”

Prince smiled back. It was a rare sighting for Krystal. She said, “Wait here for a sec.”

Prince nodded and waited while Krystal headed back to her room. She quickly came back, handing him a pink teddy bear and saying, “I’m sorry, too.”

Prince chuckled as he took the teddy bear. He looked at it closer and said, “Why does this bear look like it’s been to the hospital?”

“Now that’s a story,” Krystal said. “Do you wanna grab breakfast tomorrow?”

   “Sure.”

   “Sounds good. Good night.”

   “Good night, Krystal.”

Krystal closed the door and Prince went on his way.

Mission Spyder

“So, any ideas what he could possibly want us for this time?” Krystal asked the others. She along with Rey, Sana, and Akira were all heading towards Headmaster Devil’s office. They were in the middle of class when they were called and if anyone wasn’t in the mood to go, it was Krystal.

“I have no clue,” Sana said.

“More specifically, why us four?” Krystal asked.

“I was thinking the same thing,” Rey said.

“Well, we’ll find out,” Akira said. “Maybe he just needs to talk to us.”

By the time they reached the door of Headmaster Devil’s office, Sana went ahead and opened it. She entered along with the others, seeing Headmaster Devil was actually not at his desk. He was watering some plants that he had sitting by the window.

“Hello there, kids,” Headmaster Devil said as he turned towards the group.

“Uh, hi,” Akira said. “Since when did you keep plants?”

“For a while now. It’s a new hobby I’ve developed,” Headmaster Devil said.

“Well, that’s nice and all, but why exactly did you call us four?” Sana asked.

“Oh, right,” Headmaster Devil said. “I have a mission for you four.”

“Mission?” Krystal asked. “Why us four specifically?”

“I’ll get to that if you let me talk,” Headmaster Devil said.

Krystal pouted as she gave a side-eye to Sana, Rey, and Akira who were seemingly chuckling at her. Headmaster Devil put his watering can down and said, “In Ringling City, there have been a strange number of disappearances occurring within Ringling High School.”

“You mean disappearances related to dark beast activity?” Sana asked.

“That’s what signs are pointing towards,” Headmaster Devil said. “The scene of every disappearance at the school has involved the discovery of residue from a spider’s web.”

“Eww. Clearly someone needs to get an exterminator,” Krystal said.

“Krystal, try to see the bigger picture here,” Headmaster Devil said, shaking his head.

“Are they all kids?” Akira asked.

“Yes. Six students have disappeared in the past two weeks,” Headmaster Devil said.

“So, what are we supposed to do then?” Rey asked.

“I want the four of you to go undercover in the school as students and investigate the situation. See if there really is a dark beast behind all of this,” Headmaster Devil said.

“Hold up. I understand going undercover, but why us four specifically? Can you at least answer that?” Krystal asked.

“Part of it was availability. But mainly I felt all four of your skills would work well together,” Headmaster Devil said. “When you get to the school, you’ll meet with the other student you’ll be working with.”

   “Other student?” Sana said.

“You four will be working with a student from Crimson Phoenix,” Headmaster Devil said.

“What’s the student’s name?” Rey asked.

“The headmaster didn’t tell me,” Headmaster Devil said.

   “Why?” Akira asked.

“Let’s just say she likes to mess around with me. She’s all about surprises,” Headmaster Devil said. “She did say she sent one of her best though.”

“Don’t tell me she’s one of your exes,” Krystal said.

Headmaster Devil rolled his eyes and said, “You better get going. Your mission begins tomorrow morning.”

Krystal shook her head as she walked out of the office with Sana, Rey, and Akira. Yep. Definitely one of his exes, Krystal thought.

***

The following morning, Sana, Rey, Krystal, and Akira took off to Ringling City in West Viridian. Traveling didn’t take as long thanks to the hoverboards they got from school. The group landed near the building of Ringling High School. It was your average school building with a brick exterior, certainly not as big as Ringmasters Training Academy. Sana watched the students go inside the building. She turned to the others and said, “Okay, what’s the game plan?”

“Uh, aren’t we supposed to meet with the student from Crimson Phoenix?” Rey asked.

“But we don’t even know what the student looks like,” Krystal said. “Sheesh. Sometimes I wonder if Devil knows what he’s doing.”

“Honestly, I feel like the student is going to find us,” Akira said.

“How do you know?” Sana asked.

   “Look,” Akira said.

Sana turned around to see a boy coming right up to them. He had dark hair with indigo highlights that was tied in short braids and golden clips on both sides of his head. He had sharp, dark eyes as well. He looked rather muscular and wore a blue tank shirt with a silver medallion over it, gold wristbands, gray trousers with golden trim, and gray boots.

“You must be Sana, right?” the boy asked.

“Yeah,” Sana said. “Are you the student we’re supposed to be meeting?”

“Yup,” the boy said. “I’m Rainer. Rainer Driskell.”

   “Rain or drizzle?” Rey said.

“That wasn’t close, Rey,” Akira said.

“You’re a funny one,” Rainer said to Rey. “So, you’re the famous Rey.”

“Famous! I’m famous?!” Rey exclaimed. “Oh, hell, yeah!”

“And you two must be Krystal and Akira,” Rainer said.

“You seem to know us pretty well,” Krystal said.

“Headmaster Carmine knows how to gather intel,” Rainer said.

“How come your headmaster wouldn’t tell us about you?” Sana asked.

“Uh, let’s just say she’s an eccentric one,” Rainer said. “Anyway, I’m sure your headmaster told you guys about the job, right?”

“Yeah. Do you have a plan in mind?” Sana asked.

“Uh, I’m more of a one step at a time kind of guy,” Rainer said.

“Okay. You don’t have a plan,” Sana said.

Rainer could feel his cool guy act die in seconds. He knew Sana was right. After all, Headmaster Carmine didn’t give him too much of a plan. He also felt overwhelmed with working with RTA students. He had already heard all the stories about them.

“Sorry, that was a bit much. Maybe its best we come up with a plan together,” Sana said. “I mean that’s why we were chosen to work together, right?”

“Oh, yeah! You’re right!” Rainer said. “That’s a good start.”

“First thing we can do is figure out a way to get into the school,” Akira said.

“I got that covered,” Rainer said as he took off his backpack. He took out a few sets of uniforms. “We’re gonna need to change into these.”

Rainer handed everyone a uniform. Krystal looked at the uniform, which consisted of a white button-up shirt, red necktie, and a khaki skirt. She said, “They really make their students wear this? Why can’t schools take note from anime? At least the uniforms in those shows are cute.”

“Krystal, this is not the time to complain about fashion,” Sana said, rolling her eyes.

***

Sana, Rey, Krystal, Akira, and Rainer went inside the school and changed in the bathrooms. Once they had changed, they stepped out into the hallway. Krystal had gotten a good look at herself in the uniform, and she said, “You know…as tacky as this uniform is, I certainly pull it off.”

   “Okay, now what?” Sana asked.

“Now, we just slip into one of the classes,” Rainer said. “Based off the intel I got from Headmaster Carmine, four out of the six students were from the sophomore class. The other two were juniors.”

“Okay. Maybe we should split up then,” Akira said. “One group can join a sophomore class and the other will join the juniors.”

“That’s a good idea, Akira,” Sana said. “Rey and I can join the sophomores and you guys can join the juniors.”

“Actually, I think I should team up with you, Sana,” Akira said. “I have a feeling that’ll work better. Also, Rainer, you might need to babysit these two.”

   “Babysit?!” Rey exclaimed.

“You two have been known to make dumb moves every now and then,” Akira chuckled.

“Hey! I am not dumb!” Krystal exclaimed. “I happen to know five languages!”

“I never said YOU were dumb. Just that you make dumb moves,” Akira said.

“Let’s just go with that plan. I’ll go with these two,” Rainer told Akira.

Akira nodded and went off with Sana. As Krystal walked in the other direction with Rainer and Rey, she said, “I think everyone underestimates my intelligence.”

***

After Rainer figured out where the junior classes were, he led Rey and Krystal to classroom 3C right when class was about to begin. Rainer could tell the teacher, Ms. Robinson, was looking at them suspiciously. However, he managed to convince her that they were indeed new students and she had them sit all the way in the back.

Rey couldn’t help but feel a need to daydream during class. Classes at the academy were far more fun than the calculus class they found themselves in. He saw Rainer was taking notes, trying to go along with the act. He thought he should do the same, but he looked over at Krystal, who was just retouching her lip gloss. Instead, he thought about what Sana would do. She would focus on the mission and look for any clues in her surroundings.

One of the students was called by Ms. Robinson to the board. Rey immediately took note of how slowly the brunette-haired girl was walking. He couldn’t see her face as she wrote on the board, but even her hand movements were slow. What was striking was he could faintly see a strange marking on her right leg. It was miniscule, yet noticeably squiggly.

Rey looked over at Rainer and whispered, “Hey, the girl at the board has something on her leg.”

   “Really?”

   “Yeah. It’s some weird marking.”

“Rey, do you have something you wish to share with the class?” Ms. Robinson asked.

Rey gulped as the other students turned towards him. “Oh, nothing. I was just discussing the equation,” Rey said. “Calc is so fascinating.”

“Ms. Krystal, are you paying attention to the board or your makeup?” Ms. Robinson asked.

Before Krystal could even say anything, the bell rang. Students started getting up and Rainer signaled to Rey and Krystal to get out as quickly as possible.

“Honestly, what’s her deal?” Krystal said as she headed out with Rey and Rainer. “Everyone needs a touchup here and there.”

“Well, let’s not focus on that,” Rainer said. “What’d you see, Rey?”

“There was a strange marking on that girl’s leg. Plus, her whole body was acting so slow. Almost like she was drained out of energy,” Rey said.

“Okay. But how does that have to do with the disappearances?” Krystal asked. “How do we know she didn’t just pull an all-nighter?”

“The marking could be a clue though,” Rainer said. “Sophomore lunch is supposed to be after the next class. Maybe we can watch her there.”

“That sounds solid,” Rey said. “What do we do till then?”

“Till then, we can slip into sophomore chemistry,” Rainer said.

“Can’t we pick a fun class for once?” Krystal asked.

***

On the other hand, Sana and Akira had exited out of the English class they were in. As they walked down the hallway, Sana stopped upon hearing her phone ring. She took it out from her backpack and saw she had received a text from Rey. Akira turned to her and said, “Something up?”

“It’s Rey. They found a girl in their class with a suspicious marking on her leg. He said we should look out for anyone with a similar marking.”

“Strange marking? Did he say anything else?”

“He also mentioned she was very low on energy.”

“Hmm. Strange markings and low energy.”

   “What are you thinking?”

“I’m thinking the disappearances are probably linked to a dark beast. But I don’t know what kind. Though if spider web residue was found in the disappearances, that could be it. This almost reminds me of Madame Naga.”

“You’re right. I hope its not as serious as that.”

“All right. What do you think we should do now?”

“I think we should let Rey and the others follow their lead. In the meantime, we can snoop around and look for clues.”

“Don’t you think that isn’t wise considering some faculty member could be lingering around the halls?”

“True. We just have to be stealthy about it.”

***

After a few minutes passed, Sana and Akira headed downstairs to the first floor. They hid behind a section of lockers and Akira subtlety checked the hallway. Seeing no one was around, she said, “Clear.”

Sana and Akira stepped out into the hallway. As the two walked, Sana looked around everywhere to see if anything was out of place. Her searching came to a halt when she noticed something on the floor. She bent down and picked up what appeared to be a spider web.

“Akira, check this out,” Sana said.

Akira bent down and looked at the spider web that Sana was holding in her hand.

“Well then. Either this school has a bug problem, or a dark beast of the spider variety is behind this.”

“How do we find out for sure?”

Before Akira could answer, she could hear the sound of footsteps coming near. “Someone’s coming,” Akira whispered. “Quick. In the bathroom.”

Sana and Akira quickly headed into the bathroom before they could be seen. Once inside, Sana found more spider web residue on the bathroom floor. Seeing the residue herself, Akira said, “Okay, this is definitely not just a bug problem.”

“Let’s check the stalls,” Sana said.

Sana went to the end of the bathroom, looking at each stall. Akira went to one on the other end. She saw nothing, but as she turned to head back, she could feel something strange on the floor. She stepped on the floor again, hearing a creaking sound.

“Sana, get over here,” Akira said.

Sana walked over to the stall that Akira was at. Akira looked at her and said, “I think there’s something up with the floor here.”

Sana looked down at the tiled floor where Akira was standing. She pressed her foot against it, feeling an odd shaking sensation from it. She bent down and looked closely at the tiles. The more she looked at them, the more she noticed they weren’t fully pressed into the floor. Sana pulled at the tiles, taking them completely out. What was left was a big hole that seemingly led to the basement.

“So, does this qualify as a clue?” Akira asked.

“I would say yes. Unless this school is seriously behind on maintenance.”

“Well then…I say we go down and see where it takes us.”

Akira nodded. Sana slowly got down and jumped through the hole with Akira following her. Sana was about to walk ahead till Akira said, “Wait. We could be walking into enemy territory.”

   “Yeah?”

“So, we should make ourselves discrete. I’ll transform into my siren form and carry you. No one will hear our footsteps then.”

   “Aah, I gotcha. Sounds good.”

Akira proceeded to transform. Her golden glow enclosed her body and faded once she was in her siren form. She flapped her wings and began to fly, carrying Sana by holding onto her shoulders. Now they had a real search ahead of them.

***

Later on, in chemistry class, Rainer, Rey, and Krystal were seated in the back. They all continued to blend in, working on an experiment just like the rest of the class. Rainer was in the middle of mixing a solution when he asked Rey, “Hey, can you give me some water?”

With no response, Rainer turned to Rey, seeing he looked distracted.

   “Rey, what’s up?”

   “I smell something weird.”

Suddenly, puffs of smoke were emerging around the classroom. The smoke alarm went off and the teacher seemed to be caught off guard.

“Everyone! Exit the classroom and evacuate the building,” the teacher ordered.

Students began following the teacher out of the classroom, one after the other. Rainer, Rey, and Krystal headed towards the door. Rey tried to open it, but it was seemingly locked.

   “Rey, lets go!” Krystal exclaimed.

“I can’t. The door won’t budge,” Rey said.

“Hold up. Why do I have a feeling there’s something in here with us?” Rainer asked.

Rey could feel what Rainer was feeling. He turned around and realized he was right. “Guys, look,” Rey said.

Rainer and Krystal turned around. Before Rey and the others was a woman. She had dark hair tied in a top bun, purple eyes, and a devilish smirk. Her pale gray skin glistened in the sunlight from outside along with the black gown she was wearing. The most eye-catching thing had to be the shiny red pendant she was wearing.

“So, you’re the kids snooping around on what I’m doing here,” the woman said.

“Damn. She found out what we were doing, and we’ve never even seen her,” Rey said.

“Who are you and what do you want?” Rainer asked.

“I don’t owe you my name, but I can tell you what they used to call me back in the day,” the woman said. “They call me the Spider Queen.”

“Uh, not in that outfit, honey,” Krystal said.

“As for what I’m doing, your friends downstairs seemed to have gotten the idea and I don’t like repeating myself,” the Spider Queen said.

“She got to Sana and Akira,” Krystal said, preparing herself by drawing out her wand. “She means business then!”

“Well, I say we show her a thing or two, guys!” Rey exclaimed.

“Don’t mind me if I do as well,” the Spider Queen said as her eyes glowed bright red.

Suddenly, several large spiders emerged from the sinks of the desks. The sight of them made Krystal shriek, “Eww! Spiders are one thing. But spiders in water is just nasty!”

“This is gonna be hard without Sana by my side, but we gotta attack!” Rey exclaimed as he transformed into his tiger form.

As the spiders made their way towards them, Krystal and Rey got into action. Krystal launched one sound beam after the other towards the spiders while Rey launched fireballs. It was all seemingly going just fine till Rey stopped and looked at Rainer. He had transformed his wand into what looked like a winged sword. But he was just standing there, seemingly frozen as he looked at his sword. Rey transformed back and said, “Rainer! What’s up with you?”

Rey immediately got attacked by a swarm of spiders. As he tried to fend them off, Krystal rushed in to help. But she too was ambushed by them.

“Ugh! Get these nasty things off me!” Krystal cried as she tried to hit them with her sonic bell.

The Spider Queen held out her hand turning it to signal the spiders. They started shooting webs at Rainer, enclosing his body. She began to head towards the door, and she said, “It seems my work is done. It’d be best if you leave yourselves out from this point.”

With the Spider Queen gone, Rainer realized he had to get out and help Rey and Krystal. He quickly tried to raise his arms and said, “Come on. Come on.”

His golden wristbands began to glow brightly. As he emerged from the webs, he concentrated the energy in his hands, and he created a giant sphere of water. He launched the sphere towards the spiders, washing them away. In the process, Rey and Krystal got wet as well. The spiders had all disintegrated one after the other. Krystal slowly got up and said, “You know, for once, I’m not mad that my outfit is ruined.”

“Uh, you hated the uniform anyway,” Rey said as he got up. “Damn. We’re soaking.”

“Sorry, guys,” Rainer said. “I messed up.”

“No, no! You just saved us right now! Rey exclaimed. “Also, that move you just did was really cool! How’d you-”

“Guys, we need to get to Sana and Akira!” Krystal exclaimed.

“Oh, right! Let’s go!” Rey said.

The trio headed out through the door. By the time they got to the hall, Sana and Akira were right there. Rey was shocked to see them both. Akira was holding onto Sana, who was seemingly injured.

“Sana! Are you okay?” Rey asked.

   “We’re fine, honestly,” Sana said.

“Fine?! That Spider Queen injured her leg,” Akira said. “Judging by the way you guys look, it seems she got to you as well.”

“Damn it! My hair is frizzing, isn’t it?!” Krystal cried.

“Look, we need to get out of here and find a safe spot to retreat,” Akira said.

“There’s a small park down the street. Its usually not crowded,” Rainer said.

“Let’s go there then!” Rey said as he helped Akira with holding Sana.

***

Rainer led everyone to Rowling Park. The park was indeed quiet. Hardly anyone was present there. Once they were there, Rey and Akira helped Sana sit down on one of the benches. Krystal took a spare scarf she had with her and used it to tie around Sana’s leg.

“How did it happen?” Rey asked.

“The Spider Queen used one of her spider legs to pierce Sana’s leg in combat,” Akira said.

“Hold on. She can transform herself?!” Rey exclaimed.

“We found her in the basement of the school. There’s an abandoned room where she’s keeping the missing students,” Sana said. “It looks like she’s using their energy to fuel her powers.”

   “What the hell?” Rey said.

“This is absurd. I’m gonna call Devil and find out if he has any intel on this Spider Queen,” Krystal said as she started dialing Headmaster Devil’s number on her phone. “There’s gotta be something we’re not getting here.”

Krystal’s call was indeed answered. But instead of Headmaster Devil appearing on the screen, it was Zayn.

“Zayn?!” Krystal exclaimed. “Why are you answering?!”

“Uh, hi to you, too,” Zayn said.

“What’s up, man?” Rey asked as he walked over to see Zayn on Krystal’s phone screen.

“Uh, nothing much. I just needed to get something from the office,” Zayn said.

“Okay…um…is Headmaster Devil there?” Krystal asked.

“He is now. I’ll hand it to him,” Zayn said.

“Why’s your face red?” Rey asked Krystal.

   “Shut up!” Krystal exclaimed.

Zayn handed the phone to Headmaster Devil. Once he was on, he said, “Krystal, how are things going with the mission?”

“Well, a lot of stuff has happened today,” Krystal said. “I need to know if you know anything about someone named the Spider Queen.”

“The Spider Queen? You ran into her?” Headmaster Devil asked.

“So, you know her?” Rey asked.

“Yes. But her name hasn’t come up in a long time. She went off the radar years ago,” Headmaster Devil said.

   “Who was she?” Krystal asked.

“She was a notorious dark beast. Not as powerful as Madame Naga, but definitely similar in abilities. After she was defeated by a ringmaster from the Ringmasters Society, she was never heard from again,” Headmaster Devil said.

“Wait. Maybe this ringmaster that defeated her took away a lot of her power,” Sana said. “That’s why she’s using the kids to fuel her power. She’s trying to regain it.”

“But how could she do that?” Akira asked.

As the others were pondering, Rey thought on it for a moment. He suddenly remembered something and said, “Maybe it has something to do with that red pendant she was wearing.”

“Oh! The pendant must be what draws out the energy from the humans,” Krystal said. “But why go after regular kids?”

“It’d be easier for her to swallow energy from normal humans than ringmasters or human-beasts,” Headmaster Devil said.

“Are the kids still in the basement?” Rey asked Sana and Akira.

“They are. But their energy has already been taken. We need to find her and break the pendant. I’m pretty sure that’s the only way we can restore their energies,” Sana said.

“Well, you’d have to find out where she’s heading to do that,” Headmaster Devil said. “Krystal, send me her description details and I can see if I can get any intel on her location.”

   “Sure thing,” Krystal said.

Headmaster Devil ended the call. While Krystal was preparing to send details, Rey took note of Rainer. He was sitting on a bench by himself, and he was awfully quiet for a while. He noticed Rainer was looking at his winged sword. Rey wondered why he didn’t use it when they were fighting the Spider Queen. Something about it seemed to bother Rainer.

“Rainer’s been pretty down,” Rey said.

“I noticed. Do you know what’s wrong?” Sana asked.

“Not exactly. But he keeps looking at the sword,” Rey said.

“I wonder why he has it if he doesn’t even use it in battle,” Krystal said.

“Well, someone should go talk to him,” Akira said. “To work better as a team, we have to understand each other’s emotions.”

“Akira has a point. I’m gonna go talk to him,” Rey said.

Rey got up and walked over to where Rainer was sitting. He could tell Rainer wasn’t even aware that he was coming. Rey said, “That’s a nice sword you got there.”

“Oh, thanks,” Rainer said, startled upon hearing Rey’s voice.

“I gotta ask…that trick you did back there was really cool. Do your wristbands allow you to control water?”

“Yeah. They help me concentrate my water energy.”

“That’s cool. If you don’t mind me asking, why didn’t you use your sword back there?”

Rainer wasn’t surprised that Rey would ask this question. After all, he couldn’t stop looking at his sword. Rey sat next to him as he pondered over how to respond.

“I understand if you don’t wanna talk about it,” Rey said. “I wanted to ask because it seems to bother you. I know we just met and all, but you’re a cool dude and I really think we could be good friends.”

“And we want to help you if we can,” Sana said.

Rainer looked up to see Sana, Krystal, and Akira had come by as well. Seeing all the support around him, he felt as though he could trust the others.

“Okay. This sword isn’t any ordinary ringmaster weapon,” Rainer said. “It’s the legendary sword of Shango.”

   “Sword of Shango?” Sana said.

“Yeah. According to my ancestors, the sword belonged to Shango, the ultimate thunder ringmaster,” Rainer said.

“Thunder! You have water and thunder powers?!” Rey asked.

“Yeah. This sword has been passed down in my family for generations. For every generation, a worthy successor is chosen. This time it was me. My dad gave it to me recently. We had a whole ceremony as per tradition,” Rainer said.

“I see. So, it’s a lot to handle, isn’t it?” Akira asked.

“The power of this sword brings a lot of pressure along with it,” Rainer said.

“By any chance, do you mean family pressure?” Krystal asked.

“Oh, yeah. The elders had a lot to say about my dad’s decision. Of course, nothing beats the fact that my mom was against it,” Rainer said.

   “Your mom?” Akira said.

“Yeah. There’s some history there. Not the good kind,” Rainer said. “Even though she and my dad aren’t together anymore, I still see her. And every time, it just gets worse.”

   “That bad, huh?” Rey said.

“She didn’t even speak to me at the ceremony,” Rainer said. “And she waits a whole week later to send me a message explaining why she didn’t speak to me.”

“Wow. Mother of the year,” Krystal said.

Hearing the little bit of Rainer’s history with his family made Rey put things together. He looked at Sana and from the way she looked at him, even she could understand where he was coming from.

“So, your mother and the pressure from your family is making you doubt your worthiness of wielding the sword?” Rey asked.

“Pretty much. I haven’t even talked to the sword,” Rainer said.

   “The sword talks?” Akira asked.

“When Shango died, he sealed his spirit in his sword so he could live on with every swordsman after. Kinda like a guide I guess,” Rainer said.

“Hey, isn’t that similar to your zodiac wand, Krystal?” Sana asked.

   “I guess so,” Krystal said.

“Rainer, I may not have known you for long, but I think you’re a cool and capable guy,” Rey said. “You gotta believe in yourself, man! You got this!”

“You really think so?” Rainer asked.

“Definitely. You totally saved us back there. It may have messed up my hair, but a bad hair day is worth it when you’re still in one piece,” Krystal said.

“Your headmaster sent you here for a reason. She believed in you. You just have to have faith in yourself,” Sana said.

“I don’t know how this sword works. But if you trust in yourself, I’m sure the sword will trust you,” Akira said.

Rainer looked back at his sword. The golden wings on its hilt and its shiny sheen captivated him. He felt something different when looking at the sword this time. It was elation. He felt a sudden drive in him that he didn’t feel before.

Rainer stood up from the bench. He could tell the others were looking at him, possibly wondering what was on his mind. He turned to them and said, “Thank you, guys. I’m ready to get down to business.”

“Yeah! That’s what we like to hear!” Rey exclaimed.

“All right. We have to figure out where the Spider Queen is heading,” Akira said. “Sana and I didn’t get much insight from when we ran into her. That means we’ll have to use our brains and figure this out.”

“Well, let’s start with the basics. Why would she go to this school in the first place?” Sana asked. “One thing I can think of is that this school has the largest student body in the state. That aside, students are easy victims.”

   “How so?” Rainer asked.

“They’re easier to get to. Remember those spiders she summons? I’m pretty sure she’d have them bite the students she chose as victims. Once they were bitten, they’d be vulnerable enough for her to abduct them and drain their energy,” Sana said.

“Those are good points,” Akira said. “But why did she leave the school entirely then if it was her perfect pool for victims?”

“Maybe because we caught onto her plan?” Rey asked.

   “Seems too simple,” Rainer said.

As the others were trying to figure things out, Krystal said, “Oh my gosh! I got it! I know where the Spider Queen is!”

   “You do?” Akira asked.

“Yes! I know the exact place she’d be heading,” Krystal said. “You said the reason she came to this school was because of the large population, right?”

   “Yeah,” Sana said.

“Well, I happen to know that Akshay Arora is having a show tonight in Ringling City to showcase his upcoming summer collection,” Krystal said. “It’s the perfect place to nab victims.”

“Why would the Spider Queen go to a fashion show?” Rey asked.

“Hello?! Plenty of young celebrities, socialites, and personalities are all seated in one area. Its an easy way for her to get a bunch of victims all at once with her spiders and snuff out their energy,” Krystal said.

Sana looked at the others, who were just as surprised as her. She couldn’t believe it. “Krystal, you may actually be on to something,” she said.

“I always knew my knowledge of fashion would get me somewhere,” Krystal said as she flipped her hair.

“So, we just go to this fashion show and stop the Spider Queen,” Rey said.

“Its not that easy, Rey. You have to be invited to those shows,” Akira said.

“And we need a proper plan,” Sana said.

“Well, when it comes to fashion, I have my ways,” Krystal said.

“And I think I can come up with a plan,” Rainer said.

In downtown Ringling City, the Akshay Arora show was being held at 21st Tower. Attendees were entering one after the other. And Krystal was determined to get the group in. The plan was in motion. While Rainer was planning to enter the building from the opposite side, Krystal was in charge of getting the others inside the show. It only took her a few hours prior to the show, but she was able to make a legit invitation for them to get in and she went the extra mile by creating matching outfits for them all to wear. The outfits had a red and teal color palette with variations on the same design. Krystal’s was a dress with over-the-knee boots, Rey’s was a set with a jacket and shorts, Sana’s was a one shoulder jumpsuit, and Akira’s was a cropped jacket with a matching skirt. The four of them were standing in line to enter the building for the show.

“I gotta hand it to you, Krystal. I’m liking these outfits,” Sana said.

“Though why do we look like a band?” Akira asked.

“That’s because for tonight, we are,” Krystal said, handing the invite she made to Akira.

Rey looked over to see what was on the invite. After reading it, he said, “We’re Ringmaster Pop? What kind of dumb name is that?”

“Its not dumb!” Krystal exclaimed. “It’s not like you have my creativity, Rey.”

“What creativity?! The name sounds like something a bunch of wannabe kids trying to act like pop stars would come up with,” Rey said.

“Dude, let it go. We need to focus on the task at hand,” Akira said.

“Rainer just messaged me,” Sana said, looking at her phone. “He says he’s in the building.”

“Good. Once we’re in, things will really go into motion,” Krystal said.

“You mean IF we get in,” Rey said.

Krystal put her annoyance to the side as she stepped forward in line with the others following. She handed the invitation to the security guard. After looking at it, he said, “Ringmaster Pop?”

“We’re very popular in France,” Krystal said.

“Oh, I’ll have to check you guys out,” the security guard said. “You can come in.”

Krystal smirked as she led the others inside the building. She turned to Rey and said, “What was that you said, Rey? You eating those words now?”

“Shut up,” Rey said. “Now what?”

“We have to be on the lookout for the Spider Queen,” Akira said. “I’m guessing she’ll be in the audience.”

“Rainer needs us to signal him when we spot her,” Sana said. “I think we should split up to cover the area of the room.”

With everyone in agreement, Sana, Rey, Krystal, and Akira split up, going in different directions to cover the whole space. Sana headed to the far-right corner. As she walked by, she stopped, seeing the Spider Queen was seated in the back at the end of the row. She quickly typed a message on her phone for everyone that read, “Found her. Stay in your positions.”

Sana notified Rainer of the sighting. Rainer was waiting in the balcony. He looked down at the audience, finding the spot where the Spider Queen was at. He bent down and drew out his wand, transforming it into the winged sword. The show had just started. Music was playing and the first model started walking the runway.

Rainer kept a close eye on the Spider Queen. He had to wait and see her make a move. He held tightly onto his sword. He looked at it and said, “Shango, if I need you, are you there?”

After a few seconds, Rainer wasn’t sure if Shango could hear him or if he was just talking to himself. But he wanted to put all his doubts aside. Suddenly, the sword’s blade began to glow. He also heard a faint yes. Rainer looked back at the audience and could see that the Spider Queen was getting ready to move, her pendant beginning to glow. Before she could summon her spiders to do their dirty work, Rainer raised his sword and a bright bolt of lightning emerged from the blade, hitting directly at the ceiling lights. The lights in the room went out and everything went dark. Audience members began to murmur amongst themselves. It didn’t take long for people to exit the area in masses. Once everyone was gone, Rainer raised his sword again, using the massive electric sparks from the blade to light up the space and bring back the electricity in the room. He could see Rey, Sana, Krystal, and Akira were together, standing on the runway. And not too far from them was the Spider Queen, who looked directly at Rainer.

“I should’ve made sure you were dead back there,” the Spider Queen said.

“Bet you didn’t count on this,” Rey smirked.

“There’s nothing to count on with a bunch of weaklings like yourselves,” the Spider Queen said.

“Let’s see if you still say that when we beat your ass this time,” Akira said.

“Everyone, go!” Sana exclaimed as she transformed her wand into her trishula.

Krystal got out her sonic bell while Rey and Akira transformed. The Spider Queen’s eyes glowed red and she unleashed her spiders towards Sana and the others. Sana turned to everyone and said, “Remember the goal. Don’t get too distracted by the spiders.”

Everyone nodded. Sana and Rey joined together taking on as many spiders with their fire combinations while Krystal used her sonic bell on them. Akira noticed Rainer still standing at the balcony. She flew over to him and said, “Aren’t you coming down?”

“You heard, Sana. We have to focus on getting that pendant,” Rainer said as he looked at the Spider Queen.

“We can’t all go after her at once. Not with those spiders.”

Rainer noticed that Sana, Rey, and Krystal were trying to take down spiders and get to the Spider Queen, but she just kept summoning more to get in their way. It seemed like they would keep coming no matter how many times they try to get to her. But then, something clicked.

“I have an idea. You’ll have to trust my lead.”

   “Go for it.”

Rainer raised his sword up again, knocking out the lights in the room. The Spider Queen said, “This trick is an old one.”

   “Is it?” Rainer asked.

Rainer illuminated the room again with his sword with Akira flapping her wings and launching a strong gust of sand towards the Spider Queen. “Now, guys!” Akira called to Sana, Rey, and Krystal.

Krystal launched a sound beam from her sonic bell at the Spider Queen. The Spider Queen deflected it with a dark energy beam from her hand. Rey went ahead and attacked her directly by pouncing at her. The Spider Queen pushed him off, making him hit into Sana.

Rainer once again turned off the light with his sword. This became a back-and-forth tactic he used so the others could continue to attack her directly. It didn’t take long for her to get agitated. She unleashed her spider legs from her back. Suddenly, she became a much larger presence.

   “Damn,” Rainer said.

Along with the Spider Queen’s upgrade, there were still many of her spiders surrounding the group. The Spider Queen pinned Krystal to the ground by one her legs. Sana wanted to help her, but she knew she had to do something about the spiders. She looked at Rey, who nodded back at her. The two charged towards the spiders with Sana charging her fiery trishula through them and Rey launching one fireball after the other. Rainer looked at Akira, who nodded back at him.

“Krystal, I know its hard, but you have to ring your sonic bell,” Akira said.

“Ha! Like that’s going to stop me!” the Spider Queen laughed.

“Worth a shot,” Krystal grunted as she rang her sonic bell.

With the sonic bell’s sound, Akira aligned with it using her singing voice. The sound waves of her voice and Krystal’s sonic bell were able to freeze the Spider Queen in her tracks. It was just what Akira needed. Akira released the ribbons from both her arms and tied them around the Spider Queen’s legs, bringing her down to the ground. As she fell, the ribbons released and got back onto Akira’s arms, and she kicked the Spider Queen in the face.

With the Spider Queen down, Rainer took this as the opportunity to make a move. Seeing Sana and Rey taking out spiders and Akira and Krystal getting up, he said, “Guys, I need you to take cover!”

They quickly got out of the way and Rainer concentrated his energy through his wristbands. He launched a massive stream of water from his hands that hit the Spider Queen and all her spiders. Using this as a distraction, he grabbed hold of his sword and jumped off the balcony as the wings on the sword began to glow. He was flying. The sword allowed him to make his way towards the Spider Queen. With a clear shot at the pendant, he channeled everything into the blade, the electricity building up on it. Once he got near, he plunged the sword into the Spider Queen’s pendant, breaking it and sending a shock of lightning into her body.

The Spider Queen screamed in agony as she was struck by the lightning and the energy from her body began to get pulled out. Rainer stepped back along with the others as the spiders, the pendant, and the Spider Queen all disintegrated at once.

Shocked at his victory, Rainer fell to his knees. He felt pretty tired. Rey transformed back into his human form and said, “Way to go, Rainer!”

“Yeah, you totally saved the day!” Krystal exclaimed. “I can’t believe your sword lets you fly.”

   “Great job,” Sana said.

“No. We all did a great job,” Rainer said as he got up. “I definitely couldn’t have done this without you guys.”

“Aww, come here!” Rey exclaimed as he gave Rainer a tight hug.

“Guys, the moment is nice and all, but we should really check on the students back at the school,” Akira said.

“That’s right!” Sana exclaimed. “Let’s go!”

***

After some time had passed, Sana, Rey, Krystal, Akira, and Rainer headed back to Ringling High School. They found the students in the basement, and they all had their energy restored. With them safe, they helped them get back to their homes safely. To treat themselves to a job well done, they decided to go to a restaurant called Bobby’s. Rainer chose it as he was a big fan of their chicken wings.

“Damn. How many wings have you had already?” Krystal asked Rainer.

“Oh, come on. He deserves it for how well he did today,” Akira said.

“Believe it or not, this is the way I like to treat myself,” Rainer said. “Well, this and a good night of gaming.”

“No way! Dude, we should totally game together sometime!” Rey exclaimed.

   “I’m down,” Rainer said.

“You know, as crazy as this job was, it was great having you on board, Rainer,” Sana said.

“Same here,” Rainer said. “We’ll definitely be seeing each other again.”

“We wouldn’t have it any other way,” Rey said.

“And hey, next time, you guys will have to meet my partner back at the academy. She’s awesome,” Rainer said.

As the group were laughing and talking amongst themselves, Rey was feeling stoked. Him and the others now had a new friend in Rainer. And he had a feeling there was more to look forward to in the future.
